Chapter 3:

AVI POV

"PENTATONIX!"

What? I looked at the other four and saw the gleam in their eyes. This actually just happened. We had just won Season 3 of The Sing Off. I grabbed Kevin and gave him a huge hug. I couldn't believe what was happening. We were a new group. We didn't expect us to win anything. This was... Amazing. I yelled and hugged and celebrated with my four new best friends. They were the best and I knew that my life had been forever changed because of them. Tears formed in my eyes. My dream was coming true.

"And now, Pentatonix will NOT sing a swan song, but their winner's song."

We all tried to compose ourselves enough to sing Eye of the Tiger. I fought through the celebratory tears as I reflected on this whole experience. We had made it. I still couldn't believe it. I saw my family in the audience. I made eye contact with Esther, my sister, and I could see that she was so proud of me. I was really close to my sister and she always told me to follow my dreams. Joining Pentatonix and now winning The Sing Off was definitely the first step. I looked over at Scott as he was riffing away. I could tell he was fighting to hit the notes, but he didn't care because he was on cloud nine. Mitch was crying. He deserved this more than any of us. His talent can't be ignored and he is almost never recognised for how amazing his voice actually is. I felt like an older brother to Mitch. I felt like I had to protect him and I was so proud of him, of us, for what we just accomplished. I was snapped out of my daze as Kirstie put her arm around me. Oh, Kirstie. She truly had been my best friend throughout this entire process. She looked up to me and she also inspired me.

I love these four people with all of my heart.

We finished the song and applause erupted from the crowd. We took a bow and ran off stage celebrating.

"WE DID IT!" Kirstie screamed as she pulled all of us into a group hug. People immediately came over and congratulated us. We had a long night ahead of us full of after parties and interviews. This was absolutely surreal. Why me? I'm just a guy from California who loves music. I was in an a cappella group in college, but I never thought something like this could happen to me.

I heard my phone buzz indicating that I had a text or something. I pulled out my phone and checked: it was a Facebook message.

Michaela Kasselman: Congratulations, Avi! I'm so happy you guys won! You're absolutely amazing and you guys really deserved this.

I quickly unlocked my phone and mindlessly responded.

Avi Benjamin Kaplan: Thanks girl! We appreciate your support!

Our fans were already so sweet. It was weird to me having fans, though, but I liked it a lot. It felt nice to have people backing you up and supporting you.

"HEYYYYY!!" I heard my sister come up behind me. I pulled her into a huge hug. Poor thing, I almost suffocated her. My parents came up behind her, my mom in tears.

"I knew you would make us proud, son," my dad son as I hugged him and my mom. Once I let go I felt someone poke me in the back. I spun around to another hug.

"You're sweaty," she said as she pulled away from me, "Eh, I don't care." She pulled me into a kiss. "I'm proud of you babe."

"Thanks Jess," I responded and gave her another kiss.

"Save that for the after party, man!" Kevin yelled from the other side of the room. "We have an interview to do."

"I'll see you later, babe," I told Jess as I walked towards the rest of the group. Jess was in an a cappella group called Sonos. She was on the show too, but they were sadly eliminated very early. I was glad, though. It was hard competing against her.

After countless interviews it was finally time to get to the after party. I walked in and saw my sister sitting with Mitch's boyfriend, Travis. Travis and Esther had made great friends through these past couple months. It was nice to see that our families and friends got along with each other. I sat down with them and we all began drinking and laughing. Oh, and eating. There was so much food there and I felt like I was in heaven. I felt my phone buzz again and I checked it.

michaelalove05 is now following you!

I was new to this whole twitter thing. Everyone convinced me to get it now that I was on tv and people would want to know what I was up to. Facebook was going out of date anyways. I still didn't understand it, but I knew I had a new follower. I got my twitter like a week ago and I already had about 8,000 followers. It's crazy to me that people are that interested in what I'm doing. But again, I don't mind. This is what I've dreamed of for so long.

I clicked my phone off and continued to talk with Esther and Travis.

"Hey, I'll see you guys later!" Travis said. I assumed he was going off to find Mitch. They were so cute together, I had to admit.

"Avi, I'm so so so proud of you. I knew you guys could do it all along," Esther told me after Travis left.

"Enough about the winning, man. Tell me what you've been up to since I've been on the show! I feel like we haven't talked in ages," I responded. Esther and I continued to talk a long time about what she's been doing, how her photography career is taking off, and how rough it was to be away from each other. In the middle of the conversation I felt a body sit down next to me.

"Hey guys!" Jess's voice shrieked as she started to tell us about what had just happened at the bar about two minutes ago. I put my arm around her as she talked and I could see the smile on Esther's face disappear. Esther and Jess never got along that well, but Jess honestly thought Esther was her best friend. I could tell by her face that Esther was upset that Jess had intruded in on our conversation. I hadn't seen my sister in a long time and she wanted to catch up with me since we hadn't seen each other in a while.

Once Jess finished her story, Esther faked a laugh. I hated seeing my sister and girlfriend not get along.

"Hey, honey... How about you go get us some more drinks?" I asked her so I could hopefully steal some time for Esther. Jess agreed and left the table.

"Esther, I'm so sorry. I didn't want her to in-"

"It's fine, Avi. Really," she responded. I knew her better than that, though. She got up to leave so she didn't have to while Jess was here.

Jess returned and started talking to me about... Actually I have no idea what she was talking about. All I could think about was Esther. I wanted to comfort her, but I didn't know what to do. Again, my phone buzzed.

michaelalove05: So proud of @Avi_Kaplan and the rest of Pentatonix for their win tonight! They deserved it! #ProudPentaholic

Right, the greatest thing ever just happened to me. I can't waste this night being depressed. I decided to go find the rest of the group and celebrate. They reminded me why I'm even here in the first place.
