Peter sighed as those words came out of his mouth. This felt different than it did with Delilah. He knew that Ruby had something special. He just needed to figure it out for sure. But Peter remembered that he was still on the phone with Ruby, and he didn't want an answer from her right away, he just wanted her to know how he felt about her.
"Don't you think it's a little soon?" Ruby asked him through the phone, "I mean, I've been writing to you, and I've only known you for over a week."
"I don't care..." Peter said talking to her, "It feels right, so it must be right."
Peter was getting a little nervous if whether or not he was rushing into things with her. He could hear Ruby's breath through the phone as he was anticipating her answer. Peter looked over at everyone else, as all of them were waiting for an answer. But he knew that she wasn't going to rush into anything, and he was worried that he was going to rush her into things. But he was more worried that things were going to end badly, but he didn't know what was in store. He was just thinking about the moment he was having with Ruby. He didn't know what she was thinking, but he could hear her breathing heavily, he couldn't tell if it was excitement, fear, or anything else, which was something that he needed to figure out.
"We can talk about it when you come home..." Ruby promised to him, "And then perhaps I will get to know you even more, and I can get to know you a lot better."
Peter was pleased to know that Ruby was willing to take a chance on him. He was relieved that things were starting to work out in his favor. He really hoped that she was willing to accept him for who he was when he returned because he went through a lot as he was in the war.
"Ruby..." Peter started to say, "Thank you...and I shall see you soon..."
"Yes you will." Ruby said on the phone, "I will see you, Peter."
Peter heard the phone disconnect, and he felt a smile on his face growing and looked over at Mike's brothers, and he noticed how all of them were staring at him.
He felt as if he accomplished what he always wanted to accomplish. Finding love.
"So, when do you see her again?" Alfred asked him at the dinner table,
"Hopefully, what I will do is I will leave tomorrow morning." Peter answered, "I won't get up too early, however."
Alfred smiled looking over, and Robby rolled his eyes as Alfred started to make faces at Peter, Christian followed in with Alfred's gestures and silly faces. Peter looked over at the both of them and just laughed at Christian and Alfred making fun of him. He was blessed to have the support from people he had only met that day, But he knew Lucy was by his side, and she wanted him to be happy with everything he went through, with the war, with the women he's been with, she was proud of him with how far he had come.
"What did she say?" Lucy asked walking over to him,
"She wants to give me a chance," Peter answered, "Like for real, when I come back...I can't believe this..."
Lucy cheered with excitement and hugged him insanely proud of him. She couldn't believe what she heard, she was happy for him. But a part of her missed Mike, seeing that Peter was going to have his happy ending with Ruby.
"Mike would be so proud of you," Lucy admitted.
Peter looked around and saw the Benedetto brothers all watching him, and Lucy looked over at the brothers all looking at him still, watching and waiting for more news. But he was starting to think about Mike as well, trying his best to not break down.
"I wish he could be here." Peter said to Lucy in a soft and quiet tone, "I wish that for you more than anything else right now."
"I know," Lucy wept, "So do I...but he would want you to not think about that, and he would want you to think about what's next between you and Ruby..."
