______

deal? deal.
______

what is your legal birth name?

i don't know.

where were you born?

i don't know.

when were you born?

i'm not sure, sir.

have you always lived in the underground?

from what i can remember, yes.

what is your occupation?

i...do labor, picking fruits and vegetables for stalls that are sold at the market.

some hesitance, but alright. where is your place of residence?

i have no place of residence.

then where do you stay?

wherever i can get by, sir.

the questions ended quicker than i anticipated but they didn't seem too shocked by my answers; either they weren't expecting much of anything to be answered or they were just trying to get through this 'investigation.' if it was the former, i suppose only the poor live in the underground city and if you have enough to get a place for yourself or your family, you'd consider yourself lucky. it's a place where thieves are born and the saying beggars can't be choosers sums it up perfectly.

"here's a deal for you," the man holding the silver canister lazily in his hand slurred, "we'll put a roof over your head and food on the table until we get back with you on the investigation, but only if-and i mean only if-you're willing to work." he couldn't have emphasized those words enough.

but i couldn't be happier about the deal that was just put on the table.
