______dining room chatter
______the sound of crickets chirping had died down by the time we arrived to then be met with a noisy atmospheric chatter as we passed the room of dining soldiers and food being served by the minute.
i could only catch a glimpse of the young soldiers through the opening that lacked a door but it was enough to see them talking, gossiping, and laughing amongst each other as they ate and drank until their stomachs were satisfied after a busy day of training i would assume. a small smile found its way onto my lips imagining how nice it must be to have friends to chat or joke with like that after a days work-or simply because you just wanted to.
and then i realized, i never felt lonelier then i did in that moment.
soon enough, the door opened to reveal a room that glowed from the moons luminescence alone. my eyes flickered between the two beds that sat across from one another, the window that sat in between, a table with a couple small drawers that sat underneath the centered window, and dressers that stood at the end of each of the bed's frames. for a soldiers room, it was quite roomy and, well-nice. the sadness i felt mere moments ago had faded and was replaced by elation with a hint of excitement at the thought of having a space of my own, even if it was only temporary.
after explaining a few things about the jobs i would be starting soon and the rules i had to abide by since i would be staying with the soldiers in their barracks, he handed me the key to the room and shut the door behind him leaving me to my own company.
once i let everything sink in to the sound of solidarity echoing off the walls, i figured i would find somewhere safe to place the key and so for the time being, i stuffed it underneath the pillow of the bed i had chosen to sleep on that night; the same bed i could officially call my own for a few nights.
before i slept though, i laid in the bed that wasn't stiff or felt like it had been lying there for ages-it actually bounced, which fascinated me beyond belief-and let myself get lost in the thoughts i never had a chance to peacefully let myself do in a long time until i was comfortable enough to doze off into a deep slumber.
one of those thoughts, however, was the mention of someone in command that would be watching over me for the remainder of the days i would be staying and until the investigation was over-only he never mentioned who.
