The booming of the sound system blared in the house behind us. I lay perfectly comfortable on Billy's chest in the back of his Camaro. He was humming Bon Jovi, fingers absently running up and down my arms.
"Tell me something." he said suddenly, tilting his head down to look at me. I raised mine to match his gaze. "Hmm?" I propped my head on my hand to better support myself, waiting patiently for the question.
"What's your family like? Hopper doesn't seem like an easy person to live with." he chuckled, putting his hands behind his head. I laughed, "That obvious, eh?"
I sighed, "He wasn't always that way. Everything changed when Sarah died."
He raised a brow confused, "Who's Sarah?"
"She was my older sister. She was diagnosed with Cancer when I was 4, died later that year. Tore my parents apart. My mom couldn't stand to be in Hawkins anymore, and gave my dad the ultimatum, give up his life here or move to Chicago....and well you see that he and I are still here." I trailed off, the emotions of thinking about my mother were strong. I hadn't thought about her in a long while.
"She left you?" he was serious, but also something hidden under his tone, astonishment maybe?
I nodded, "Yep, and never looked back. It was like looking at me was too painful for her. She didn't even try to take me with her. I woke up one day, and it was like she had never existed. Good riddance in my book. Who leaves their kid behind?" I scoffed, feeling the rage fueling my heated heart.
He looked at me, eyes wide. Understanding spreading across his face. "Mine did too."
I gasped, shock evident on my face. He ran a finger across my furrowed brow and smiled softly. "My dad beat on her before he started beating on me. She couldn't take it anymore and split. Like you said, you see where we are now."
"And I thought I had the world's shittiest mom." I said shaking my head in disbelief. He shrugged, "I missed her at first. She would call to talk to me, promise that she was coming back for me."
I felt the sadness creep over me. No wonder this poor broken guy had turned out the way he had. His mother deserted him with an abusive father, and a father who mentally and physically berated him his whole life.
"Mine never even reached out. Once she was gone, she forgot all about me. Hop said I would ask about her in the beginning, but after a while I seemed to get the picture. Honestly, I don't remember a lot about her, and I love my dad whole heartedly. He never hesitated when it came to raising me on his own. That's why I take helping him with my younger sister so seriously."
"I wish I could have taken the high road like you." he said softly, eyes full of remorse. I shook my head and cupped his face in my hands. "You have a lot more shit to deal with than I ever did."
"Doesn't excuse me being an asshole."
I nodded, "True, but it does buy you a little more grace and forgiveness."
He kissed me then, firmly. Hands tangled in my hair, pulling my body closer to his. He pulled back, to run his thumbs over my cheeks.
"Do you feel like getting out of here?" he asked suggestively. We were still naked from our previous romp in the backseat, but I couldn't help the eagerness that spread through me.
"Where do you want to go?" I asked with a soft laugh.
"Drive-in? We can pretend to watch some sappy movie, and make out the whole time. Keep it PG." he offered.
"That sounds great, take me away Hargrove."
He chuckled, handing me my shirt before planting an excited kiss to my cheek. His warm lips were intoxicating, and I found myself turning to connect mine to them.
