Arty's pov~

After Carlton left out of rage, John invited me to stay the night since the sun was already set. "Thank you for letting me stay." I thanked him, and he nodded, "Of course. Have a good night." I wished him a good night as well and he closed the door. I headed over to the room he gave me, which he said was his late father's room. I opened the door, and it looked quite normal. I mean... Why would it not? I stepped inside and got into bed.

~~~~~
I woke up, the light coming in through the silk curtains. "Arty? Breakfast is ready." I shifted my gaze over to John which was making his way to the bedside. I got up, and John turned around, expecting me to follow him. "I'm not really hungry, I'll just stay up here." I said, and he nodded, understanding. He left the room, and left me standing there. I sighed. What if he's too in love with Carlton for me? Dammit.
John's pov~
I don't know if I can be with Carlton anymore... He hurts too many people, just to protect me. But that's not what I want at all. I got up from my spot at the table and left. I couldn't have an appetite if this was all I could think about. I hated how he acted like this, and it only started after he took my father's life. Could that be driving him mad? Oh, my sweet Carlton... Unexpected, but also expected, he came uninvited through the window a few seconds later.
"You arrive at the most horrible times."
"Listen! It takes too long to send letters!"
This was not about some stupid letters, I thought. I was just thinking about breaking up with him. A surge of guilt hit me like a wave, but I knew what I needed to do.
"Carlton. I don't want to be with you anymore." I swallowed back all my fears and regrets, this is what feels right.
In a confused tone, he said. "What? Why not?"
"Ever since you killed my dad you've been acting different."
He raised an eyebrow, demanding an explanation. "What do you mean 'Acting different'?"
"You've been threatening people who get close to me I'm not some child who needs looking after."
"So this is about Arty?"
"I heard what you said last night, Burke."
He curled up his fists, clearly not trying to hide his anger. "You met him like a day ago and care about him more than me?"
"No. I meant that I think you're going crazy over our love. We just don't belong together anymore."
I pointed towards the door, signaling him to get out. But he just wouldn't.
"I know you're still mad about the dad thing, but it was for the better, right?"
Was he serious? For the better? No! I'm only seventeen years old without parents, and he gets to live happily with his dad. "No. It wasn't for the better, Carlton. Now get out."
"So you're choosing Arty over me? Ah, that's so in character for you."
"I'm just being nice. Every interaction I have with a guy doesn't mean I'm in love with him."
"You're the one that's changed. You've never dressed this fancy." He said as if he was trying to compliment me.
"Dear lord, Carlton! Just go away!
(I wrote this part half asleep so I apologize for errors 😓)
"No."
Arty pushed the door open, with an annoyed look on his face. Then when he saw Carlton, a huge grin appeared on his face. "Oh look who it is, you're really stuck to him like glue."
"Not anymore, he's getting out of here."
"He's leaving me for you."
"No I'm not, Carlton. Don't make me call my guards."
"I still love you, John." He looked up at me, since he was really short, but he put on his best doe eyes and reached for my hand. I pulled my hand back.
"I'm so sor-"
I cut him off, "You're not really sorry. You used me to get close to my father just so you could get rid of him." I spoke in a sour tone.
"No! That's not it at all. He was trying to hurt me."
"I don't believe you."
Carlton's pov~
I don't believe you. That shattered my heart. He looked at me with such a sour look, which he has never done before. He is truly mad at me. "You better not be taking this as some joke Carlton because-"
"I understand." I left without saying another word.
