"you'd be super proud of me if i made friends with my teammates right?" i asks akaashi as i stride into my university's gym.
"super proud." he replies. i wonder where he is right now.
i take a deep breath and approach my new coach. she had scouted me at japans national training camp last year. she offered me an amazing scholarship, so i obviously took the offer. i needed the money.
"ah! [name] [last name]! how was your first day?" she greets me sweetly.
i shrug. "pretty good. nothing too interesting happened today. i just got settled into my classes and met my teachers." i explain, gazing around the gym.
the nets are already up, but i don't see any of my new teammates anywhere. "where is everyone?" i ask my new coach.
"they're around. a few of them went to the trainer to get taped. there are two rookies in the storage closet cleaning volleyballs. you should go join them." she gestures towards a room beside large bleachers.
i nod and follow her orders. "i'm going in." i enter the storage closet to see two girls sitting on the floor wiping volleyballs down.
"you've got this love."
"oh hey! you must be [name]! i'm riko and this is satsuki!" riko introduces herself and the other to me.
i repeat their names over in my head, making sure i don't forget. "that's me. it's nice to meet you guys." i offer them a small smile.
satsuki pats a spot on the floor beside her, motioning for me to sit down. "help us clean, then we can show you your locker in the locker room."
i take a seat beside her. she hands me a damp cloth and a volleyball that hasn't been wiped.
i begin cleaning volleyballs, watching how the two other rookies do it so i know i'm doing it right.
"what's your roommate like, [name]? do you have a roommate?" riko breaks the silence.
"i don't have a roommate, thankfully. i can stay up as late as i need to and i can sleep and do homework without any distractions." i answer her.
"i'm jealous. i've been living with my roommate for about a week now and she's always leaving them coming back at the most ungodly hours." she sighs, frowning. "satsuki got lucky. her roommate is never around when she's around."
"you could room with me if you want." i offer. i wonder if akaashi could hear me say that.
"that's a very tempting offer." she giggles, throwing another clean volleyball into the bin. "i'll try to stick it out for a little longer. i don't want to make her feel bad."
"what program are you in?" satsuki asks me.
"engineering." i smile in reply. both of them look shocked.
"so you're a smart kid, huh?" riko smiles playfully.
i smile and shake my head. "not really. i'm just good with numbers and science stuff."
"so you're smart."
all of us laugh.

"and this is your locker!" riko presents a space to me. it isn't really a locker per say. it doesn't have a door. it's just a space with a couple cubbies. but it's still pretty cool because it's my space.
"right beside both of us!" satsuki smiles.
i look to my left and to my right. i've been placed right in between them. "cool." i smile.
"you're changed and ready to go? have you eaten?" satsuki begins to fuss over me. "i have granola bars if you want one. it's important to eat before you play."
i nod. "i'm good to go, don't worry about me satsuki." with that i shove my duffel bag into my 'locker'.
"i think i could get used to this."
"tell me about all of it tonight."
