☹︎
our forth and final year of university. my final exams are coming up, and we're playing our first game at the national tournament that the top universities compete in.
there are eight teams, fortunately the tournament is being hosted at akaashi's university. i was surprised when this was announced. i was ninety percent sure we would be hosting as everyone had been coming to play against us at home all year, just like the last few years.
being in sendai for the tournament means i can visit akaashi and yuki. i can even go to akaashi's place if i need a quiet area to study for exams. we've been given two weeks to prep. the national tournament is being held right in the middle of those two weeks, so i need to study.
unfortunately, the first team we're playing against is kanoka's team. the girl i'll be playing in the vleague with.
we've kept in touch since the tryout, she's a nice person, i'm glad we'll be playing together. it's nice that we don't play the same position. no need to battle over playing time.
i already greeted her before the game. she's actually about to serve. it's one set to none, for us.
the first set was close, this one isn't any different. it's seventeen fifteen for them. we need to play good defence here.
kanoka serves. the best word to describe her serves with is probably 'violent'. it's violent but controlled.
we made one mistake when setting up our rotation. i'm not in the back row when kanoka is serving. without me in the back row our defence isn't as good. riko, who is out libero, has been doing a great job at picking up her serves.
she gets under kanoka's serve and passes it to satsuki, our setter. i start my approach, along with our middle.
satsuki sets it to me. i finish the sequence with a hard line shot.
i'd like to win in straight sets, that would be much easier on our bodies.
☹︎
"hooray." i groan, taking a seat on the court. we did not win in straight sets.
we managers to take the first two but they won the third and fourth, sending us into a fifth set to fifteen. i can confidently say that everyone is gassed. especially riko.
akaashi is somewhere in the crowd up there. i'll have to find him after we have our team meeting.
the rest of our teammates come off the sideline and cheer happily, offering high-fives and help getting off the floor. i accept both offers.
we shake hands with the other team before leaving the stadium and having our meeting outside. it's april and things are starting to get warmer.
"great job today ladies. i know some of you have exams to study for. there's a library a few blocks away from here, you can go there. or you can go to the hotel. you can go wherever you want. just study. i want you all back at our hotel by eight. early bedtime." our coach instructs.
when she's finished speaking we all disperse. usually i would have gone with satsuki and riko, but they had their exams before we left so they don't need to study. i'm taking this opportunity to go to akaashi's apartment and study.
"i'm outside." i inform akaashi so he can come find me.
"where? i'm outside too." he replies instantly.
"front entrance? where are you?"
"i'm also at the front entrance." i look around in search of my soulmate. i have to walk a little bit and i end up finding him sitting on a bench beside a tree.
"you played well." he compliments me, standing up.
"thank you." i smile, taking his hand. "can i come study at your apartment?" i ask as we begin walking.
"as long as i can work on a paper while you do so."
