"this drives gonna suck." satsuki sighs as we clamber onto the bus.
"tell me about it." riko sighs, hauling her bags towards her seat. she always brings way more than she needs too. i try to tell her but she won't listen.
i yawn and climb onto the bus after them, carrying my volleyball bag and my sleepover bag. the team is off to kyoto for a tournament. it's a seven hour drive.
we're going up a day early because our coach refuses to let us drive seven hours before we play a game. i don't blame her.
i don't know how i'll handle this drive. the longest i'm used to travelling is two and a half hours by train, i do that to visit akashi usually once a month. the only time i've gone there by bus is when we played there last year.
we've had a couple road trips over the past years, but everyone usually comes to us. our facilities are nice.
bus rides aren't terrible with riko and satsuki. they manage to make everything bearable for me. they introduce me to new rookies and make sure i remember their names, they help me with errands so i have more time for homework and they support me emotionally. they're both incredible.
the three of us all sit beside eachother, like we usually do. we always sit together, even if the seats are only meant for two people, but you can fit three comfortably into these ones.
it's six am currently. the three of us were up at five thirty. riko had to drag satsuki and i out of bed. we would have missed the bus without her.
we had both gotten up, grabbed our bags and then left. riko had actually changed and gotten ready to go, while satsuki and i literally rolled out of bed and left. i still have my blanket with me.
i lay said blanket over the three of us. i debate whether or not i should tell akashi i'm about to sleep for three hours and that i'm leaving for kyoto. it's quite early, but it is friday. maybe he has an early class?
"are you up?" i ask. if he doesn't answer i won't pester him anymore. he's up writing essays most evenings. he needs his sleep.
"i actually haven't gone to sleep. i have a couple papers due at eight. a few of my classes were cancelled today, so i'll nap when im finished." i know he's speaking to me through his thoughts, but i can tell he's exhausted. i wonder if he's wearing his glasses. i like his glasses.
"get some sleep soon okay? i'm on the bus to kyoto. let me know when you're awake so i can talk with you. i'm going to take a nap too." i reply to him.
"okay. drive safely. i love you."
"i love you too."
satsuki and riko are already asleep. i smile and lean my head on riko's head, which leans on my shoulder.
i plan to sleep for at least three hours, as i only have four hours worth of shoes downloaded on netflix.
the bus leaves once everyone has been accounted for. soon after i drift off to sleep.
☹︎
"satsuki. you're joking, right?" i stare at her in horror as she roots through her bag; the only bag she brought.
"they're not here. i must have put them in another bag!" she cries.
i begin to think about who else would have the same size feet as her. she's a five eight setter, but her feet are abnormally large for her height. she's a size ten. mens. i wear the same size as her, but this is the one time i didn't bring my older shoes.
"we'll have to buy new ones." i sigh. "is there anything in your bank account?"
"you act like i spend a shit ton of money, [name]. yes, there's money in my account, but i was going to use it to eat this week." she pouts.
ah, the life of a broke college student. i'm not doing too well myself, so i can't really make fun of her. i've had the same volleyball shoes for two years now. they're starting to lose their grip, so i might guilt trip my mom into getting her parents to buy me new ones, like i guilt trip her into buying all of my train tickets to sendai. "you took my little sister away from me and kicked me out at seventeen.." works every time.
"i'll feed you." riko joins the conversation.
"we have to go now, or we won't make it back on time." i say, looking at my phone.
we scurry over to our coach and let satsuki tell her the news, and how the three of us were going to go to a local sports store.
"you two aren't going. all three of you are starters, i can be missing all three of you. take one of the rookies satsuki." all of us frown.
"good luck satsuki." riko says. satsuki nods and josh off the find a rookie.
"you two warm up." with that she walks away.
"satsuki forgot her shoes." i decide to tell akaashi about the situation. he's met satsuki and riko, they both know about him and the soulmate thing
