Cole, Anne, Diana, and Jerry arrived to the party at exactly 8:00. Right on time. They walked inside and were greeted by Prissy with a friendly smile. "Hey! I'm glad you made it! How was the date?" Prissy seemed to genuinely care.
Jerry replied, "Fantastic. I had the most wonderful time."
"Me too," Diana said.
"It was good you two went to chaperone," Prissy addressed Cole and Anne with a wink.
"For sure. Who knows what these two would've gotten up to without us?" Cole said with a laugh.
Their conversation was interrupted by loud music. Prissy raised her voice, "Billy must've figured out the speakers." With that she left to put in her music input. Anne grabbed Diana's hand and pulled her into the main room. Their friends were mostly all there. Everyone was laughing, drinking and having a good time. The music dropped a few volume levels, to one that wouldn't cause deafness. People began to dance. Anne drug Diana to the makeshift dance floor. They began to dance and soon were joined by many other people.
Hours passed of dancing and having fun when Prissy turned the music off. She was greeted by many upset voices. "Woah woah woah. I just had to tell everyone that we're going to do karaoke now." This brought on some cheers and some groans. "So who wants to go first?" Jerry pulled Diana to the makeshift stage that had been set up. He chose a song and they sang it from start to finish. People danced and sang and had a good time. Cole and Anne performed their own rendition of Meghan Trainor and John Legend's 'Like I'm Gonna Lose You' much to Gilbert Blythe's dismay.
Somehow, Gilbert found himself on the stage next to a certain redhead. How he ended up there was beyond him. Anne wondered the same thing. They found themselves forced into a duet of 'The Start of Something New' from High School Musical. They both knew the words by heart much to each other's surprise. Gilbert caught eyes with Anne only seconds into the song and the two never broke their eye contact. Neither of them noticed Ruby run out of the room, followed by Moody. Ruby stumbled to the bathroom, attempting, and failing, to hold back her tears. She slammed the bathroom door behind her. Moody arrived a few moments later. He knocked gently on the door.
"Rubes?" He asked softly. "Are you okay?"
"Go away!" Her sob ridden voice came through the door.
"Come on, Rubes. It's me. Moody. Let me in," he begged. A second passed in silence. The lock clicked and Moody opened the door. He saw Ruby on the ground, tears streaming down her face. "Oh my goodness." Moody sat down beside her. "Ruby. What's wrong?"
"Gilbert. Anne," she struggled to form sentences through her tears. Moody put an arm around her hesitantly. She leaned into his shoulder. Her tears came to a stop. "It's always been Anne. I don't know why I never saw that."
"I'm sorry, Rubes," Moody said softly.
Back in the living room, the song came to an end, Gilbert snapped back to reality and stormed off the stage. Anne was stunned for a moment and looked around, but chased him outside. Gilbert ran into the quiet backyard. Anne followed only steps behind.
As soon as he noticed she was there Gilbert yelled, "How could you?"
"How could I what?" Anne's voice raised slightly at Gilbert's obvious anger. She tried her best to hold back her temper.
"How could you look at me like that? Sing those words to me? You don't even realize," Gilbert lowered his voice, but he was still obviously upset.
Anne was perplexed. "What don't I realize?"
"You don't realize the absolute power you hold over me," Gilbert stated.
"What power? You're not making any sense."
"You shouldn't act how you do with me when you have a boyfriend, Anne. It's not loyal," Gilbert said, softly.
Anne was in shock, "What are you on about Gilbert? I don't have a boyfriend."
Now it was Gilbert's turn to be shocked. "Cole?"
"Oh my gosh! No! He's my best friend. It will never be like that with Cole. I'm not his type I promise," Anne explained. Gilbert stared at her, dumbfounded. After some silence, Anne asked, "What power, Gil?"
"God, you're so blind!" Gilbert said, exasperated. "I'm in love with you Anne Shirley-Cuthbert!" Anne stared at him with her lips slightly parted and her eyebrows raised in complete and utter shock. "And I know you don't feel the same way, so I don't expect your favour—" Gilbert was interrupted by yet another passionate display of emotion, although this time it was much less painful. Anne's lips crashed into his in their first kiss. It was short, but perfect. She pulled away and leaned her forehead against his. "Apparently you're not the only blind one," Gilbert said with a soft laugh. "I'm sorry, Anne."
"Don't apologize." He didn't. He leaned in and kissed her again. He pulled her in by the waist and she softened into his embrace.
He pulled away and said, "You really have feelings for me too?"
"You're an idiot, Gilbert Blythe. Of course I do," Anne said, laughing. Then the pair went back inside to the party. They walked in together and were greeted immediately by Diana.
"What the heck was that you two?" She said with an accusing tone in her voice. "You we're gone forever." Her eyes looked back and forth between the two and then dropped to their hands, interlocked. "FINALLY! I've been keeping your secrets long enough."
"You knew?" Anne and Gilbert exclaimed in unison. This was answered by Diana turning on her heel and walking away.
"Gil, I don't want to hurt Ruby," Anne said, pulling her hand from his.
"Me either. Though, I'm afraid I already have. My flirting with her was an awful thing to do. I shouldn't have," Gilbert rambled. He noticeably felt bad. The two walked towards the party. As soon as they were inside they saw Ruby dancing with Moody. Gilbert Blythe was the last thing on the blonde's mind.
