Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp
August 12, 2021
6:00 A.M. (jacob's pov)

"ALRIGHTY CAMPERS, RISE AND SHINE FOR ANOTHER GORGEOUS DAY AT HACKETT'S QUARRY SUMMER CAMP!" my eyes fluttered open from my sleep groggily, dylan's announcements had woken me up 4 times this week now. i felt my jaw clench in frustration, but the tension eased when i felt a presence enter my room.

"what are you still doing in bed, jacob?" kaitlyn spoke. i slowly rolled over and faced her, my eyes sagged and i frowned.

"would you tell dylan to shut up for like... 5 minutes? please?" my voice was scratchy and low. she chuckled and turned around to walk out.

"hurry up jacob, you've got the male campers today." kaitlyn remarked, walking out of the room and down the hall. my eyes widened and i sat up in bed quickly, remembering what today was. i pulled the sheets off of me and placed my feet on the wooden floor, standing up from the bed and walking into the bathroom. i turned the light on and examined my shirtless body in the mirror, raising my arms and flexing them.

"wow. what a stud." emma chuckled in the doorway. i spun around and noticed her looking down at her phone.

"me?" i asked, hopefully.

"no, chris evans." she smirked and turned her phone around, showing a shirtless photo him. my arms dropped and i sighed, pulling my t-shirt on over my head.

"why don't you ever compliment me?" i pouted. she shrugged gave me a look.

"why don't you ever compliment me?" i didn't respond and she scoffed as she walked out.

"jeez emma, how are you always the victim?" i whispered under my breath, following her out of the room and down to the main foyer. dylan and ryan were standing there talking... well dylan was talking, ryan was ignoring him and staring out the window.

"so when you press the button on the little radio, that's when the-"

"hey guys. what's going on today?" i interrupted dylan, and he gave me an annoyed look. ryan slowly turned to face me and spoke in his monotone voice.

"we get to meet the new counselors today." ryan had absolutely no emotion.

"what's their names again? abigail and y/n?" dylan piped up, ryan turned to look out the window again. "abigail is the artist counselor, y/n's the gardening counselor." i nodded slowly and rolled back on my heels, watching dylan's poor attempt to flirt with ryan.

"mr. custos, my feet hurt." one of the campers turned around to face me. his green shirt was drenched in sweat and his face was bright red.

"wha- we're playing flag football and it's 73° degrees outside???" i furrowed my eyebrows and placed my hands on my hips. he just sighed and turned around, getting back onto the field. that's when i noticed mr. hackett crossing the field and coming towards me. he waved me over and i began walking over to him.

"hey jacob."

"what's up mr. h?"

"the bus is coming in with the new counselors around this time." he checked his watch. "you wanna come with me and welcome the newbies?" he seemed out of breath.

"sure, i've got nothing better to do." i looked back at my team of boys, and noticed them all sitting down in the grass, some picking little dandelions and messing with the turf.

we walked over to the dirt path and stood there, talking. and talking. aaand talking. until eventually we heard the hum of the bus engine down the lane and we looked down the road to see the large vehicle approaching.

"oh finally." i exclaimed, watching mr. h spit into the dirt and rub it in with his shoe.

the bus stopped in front of us and the doors opened. at first, a girl stepped out, she had short red hair and a cropped black t-shirt. she smiled shyly at us and stepped out of the way, moving her bag to the side. the second person stepped down from the steps, and he looked up. his eyes scanned the area and landed on me, his mouth rested and his hair covered his gaze. i gulped, feeling something rise in my stomach, something that emma couldn't compare with. i felt my palms immediately start sweating and my heartbeat flooded my ears.

"i'm abigail." she stuck her hand out to mr. h and he obligingly took it, a large smile spread across his face. my eyes met back with his and he smiled sweetly.

"i'm y/n." he stuck out his hand and i hesitantly took it. his swift movement released a smell in the air, tart berries and whipped cream with a hint of marshmallow, his fragrance. i couldn't help but smile too and lean closer to him.

"i'm jacob custos." my shoulders dropped and i looked into his eyes.

"well, for today it looks like y/n will be taking the female campers to the gardens." mr. h greeted y/n as well and i rounded up my campers before we set off towards the lodge.

(time skip)
"so, you uh... like to garden?" i stood in the doorway of y/n's room, fiddling with my thumbs as i tried desperately to make conversation. he just rummaged through his duffel bag and nodded without looking up. "cool... yea that's cool..." i just looked around the room, sweat running down my forehead, i could tell this was awkward.

"oh! here it is!" y/n finally said something. he stepped back from his bed and pulled out a small chain bracelet, holding it by each end to show it off to me. i stepped closer and examined it.

it was a silver chain with beautiful circular opals along the bracelet. it reflected the light beautifully.

"will you help me put it back on?" y/n stuck his hand out, palm up with the bracelet in it, i took it. he turned his hand over and i swiftly wiped my hands down my shirt before maneuvering the tiny clip on the chain. i pulled it around his wrist and leaned closer to him, once again, smelling his fragrance on his arm. i eventually clasped the chain together and y/n adjusted the bracelet on his wrist accordingly.

"thank you jacob." his tone was softer and he smiled. the way he said my name made me giddy, i gulped and nodded quickly, smiling towards him too. silence fell over the room, i didn't dare look at him, but i could tell he was looking at me.

"i should... probably get going." i stammered, y/n giggled.

"you know, you're funny jacob." y/n smiled.

"really? cause emma doesn't think so." i scratched the back of my neck, nervously.

"who's emma?" he sounded more serious this time. it shocked me. i looked up at him and our eyes met, his were dull now.

"she's-she's my girlfriend..." he stayed silent. the tension in the room rose once again, and i didn't like it.

"oh." he whispered before walking past me and out of the room, leaving me to stand there in what was said.
