Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp
August 22, 2021
6:30 P.M.                           (y/n's pov)

by this time in the summer, all of the campers had left already. i still remember watching the bus pull away from the dirt path as us counselors waved goodbye. jacob had attempted to stand next to me, but i turned to kaitlyn and we both walked away from him.

i hadn't spoken to him since the incident, he had tried to apologize multiple times... but never when emma was around. he still loved her, it was obvious, i couldn't compete. and while it shattered my heart to say that, i picked up the pieces and carried on, knowing that what i felt towards jacob would never be reciprocated. i had made pretty good friends with kaitlyn and ryan, and i even helped abi talk to nick.

"well now what?" dylan asked, placing his hands on his hips and looking around at all of us.

"we get the van going." kaitlyn said, sternly. "and we get the hell out of here."

"i still have some vegetables in my garden, i'm gonna go throw those out." i chimed in. i stepped away from the crowd and spun around on my heels, heading around the side of the lodge. when i found myself alone, all i could think about was jacob, his smile, his eyes. he was so sweet to me, until emma came around.

i reached the garden and looked up at the large plants growing in it. pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchinis, it was abundant. so i stepped through and began collecting the vegetables in a basket, humming to myself peacefully.

(jacob's pov)
i approached kaitlyn hesitantly, finally getting some peace away from emma. kaitlyn noticed me heading towards her and she popped the hood on the van. she was the only counselor other than emma who would still speak to me after what i did to y/n, but everything she said to me was a reminder of what i did to him.

"good thing you're here, help me pop the hood." i walked over to the front of the van and wriggled my fingers under the hood, lifting it and placing the stand in it. "thanks." was all that kaitlyn said.

"so umm." i started, kaitlyn kept her eyes on the car. "how do i get this thing... to stop working?" i scratched the back of my neck, already predicting her answer.

"take out the spark plugs, or maybe the rotor arm." she answered quickly. "if we're staying one more night, you need to apologize to y/n." she turned to me.

"i-i've already tried to, he won't listen."

"because you're still with emma." kaitlyn leaned back against the van and crossed her arms.

"but i like emma... and i like y/n too." kaitlyn shook her head.

"emma doesn't like you, but y/n does." my head shot up and i looked at kaitlyn.

"y/n likes me?!" she nodded, pursing her lips.

"he loves you, he told me when i went up to his room that one night." my heart raced and i smiled, thinking about him. "but you still have to apologize to him without emma there." i nodded, biting my lip and smiling like a fool.

"so where's he at?" kaitlyn gave me a look before motioning to the back of the lodge.

"and don't mess this up jacob." she pointed her finger at me. i nodded and turned on my heels, heading towards the lodge.

i pushed my back to the wall of the lodge and shuffled around the corner, watching y/n from afar. he was knelt down in the garden, picking vegetables and tossing them into a basket next to him. he swiped the hair from his face and he looked up, i quickly jumped back behind the wall, hoping he didn't notice me.

"i saw that jacob." his voice rung out across the lawn.

"shit." i mumbled under my breath, clenching my fists before stepping out into the open, and waltzing towards him. i waved nervously, cracking a smile but he just stood up and grabbed the basket of vegetables and walked out to the tree line. i followed him out there and stood next to him, looking out into the forest.
