No better song to attach to this chapter.
—————BOOM!!
Dirt rained down on their heads, no man looking better than the other as they sat there. It was early in the morning, only briefly before sunrise, and no attack came their way from the German lines, and so they resorted to huddling and warmth from their fellow man.
Mid October began to bring in the cold of the dreaded Winter, and soon their feet will be covered in snow, where they may end up with Trench foot, or dead, which could possibly be preferable. Breakfast was already served too, but it was somewhat cold due to the temperatures they current fought in.
It was safe to say it was Hell on Earth, but the very least they can bet on is that the Germans are also feeling tired with this as well. They said the war won't last long, so they'll buckle in and hold out until those Jerrys toss in first!
——Unfortunately for the British, they didn't realize how the Germans planned for the conflict to go.
They anticipated a stalemate, and a long one at that, so they got down and truly dug in. The trenches of the Germans were more sophisticated and usually easier on the men, with many modern luxuries they can appreciate such as Electricity.
Not to mention that their morale was high, particularly so on this front. Many years later, this moment of History will be remembered, not for any major bloodshed such as the "First battle of the Marne" nor because of the extreme advantage or importance of the area currently fought on.
It will be remembered by the appearance of Germany's greatest ace in the hole, taking her first step on the battlefield.
The men in the Trenches relaxed as they simply passed time playing cards or sleeping, some even writing letters that would be sent home to their sweethearts or family that are worried sick for them every day. That's when the heavy sound of footsteps came down the Trenches, and with each set of eyes that looked to the source, the higher their spirits raised.
Kurfürst walked through without looking to the soldiers, who stared up at her with awe and amazement seeing the Hero and Co-creator of Germany in the flesh. She was flanked by none other than Adolf Hitler, who by this time had been in the Army for a short while, and was promoted to Lance Corporal.
"How are our forces?"
Adolf quickly answered. "We have many men currently able bodied to fight. Your presence alone is a significant boost to morale, and...permission to speak freely?"
"You always have that around me Adolf."
"Right, well, I personally think the Brits are fucked." The boys next to them chuckled quietly, while Kurfürst remained unfazed and stone faced.
"Well, what were the orders for today?"
"General, you're the one calling the charge."
'Right... forgot they gave me that ranking...' she cleared her head, looking at the skies above them towards the sun.
'It's...barely past sunrise now.'
Her check of the sky done, she looked to the soldiers sitting in the trenches, no doubt unknowing of the horrid quality their enemies currently lived in. With a hand up to the air, she saw their eyes go to her.
"...Affix Bayonets."
The mood dropped immediately, but they stayed resolute as they went to their pants to grab the knives. One man cried out in repeat of what she said, and another further down doing the same as the entire line began to ready themselves for combat.
