You stare. You stare at Levi in disbelief, waiting for him to correct himself or say that this is some really bad joke.
He doesn't. He stares back at you, hands by his side but starting to rise, as if anticipating your movement.
"They bombed District 12," is all you can think of to say.
Levi exhales. "I passed some of the soldiers. They told me they started evacuating maybe two hours ago, before the bombs," he says, and you straighten up. "I don't know how many people made it-"
"Where are they?" you ask immediately. "The evacuees?"
"I don't know, but I can find out."
You can see why he asked you to stay with him on this; you're half tempted to just break away from him and search this place top to bottom yourself. Petra- is Petra alright? You hadn't thought about her since you woke up- you'd been too scrambled, to desperate to organize the new wave of information.
Bombed. The Capitol bombed District 12- why? Just to get at you?
"Twelve." Your eyes flicker back to Levi. He looks like he wants to grab your hand. "Stay with me."
"Okay," you agree, starting to feel a bit breathless. "Okay. Okay- but we go. We go now."
Levi nods, and he turns down the hallway. You follow him, breaking into a jog. Petra, her parents- Oluo, Gunther, Eld. Are they okay?
Your heart rate's picking up. You don't like this- you don't like this at all. Why has this come out of nowhere? And why now, two or three days after the games finished? If they were going to bomb your district- a punishment meant for you, you're sure- why didn't they do it the day you broke the arena?
The two of you make it to that guard rail overlooking the cavern. You're up near one of the top floors and it makes you dizzy to look down that far. District 13's underground bunker is huge- where the hell do you go?
You're so caught up in your anxiety that you nearly miss the footsteps coming towards you. You turn at the same time Levi does; there's a group of four guys dressed in black uniforms and carrying guns. "Hey," Levi says, stepping out to block the hallway momentarily. "Where are they sending the evacuees?"
"Return to your rooms and remain there until further notice," the man says. "Move."
"Where?" Levi asks again, unmoving.
One of the men behind the one Levi's talking to makes eye contact with you. You watch his eyes widen. "I'm two seconds away from taking one of those guns and shoving it up your ass," you snap. "Where?"
The man in front looks from Levi to you, and then back to Levi. Levi doesn't back down. "What she said," he says calmly. "I don't think it'd go over well for you to not tell us. We're not civilians."
He stares for a second longer, then sighs. "Top floor, main cafeteria," he tells Levi. He shoots you a pointed look, but you don't have time to decipher what it means, because Levi steps aside, and the four of them run by.
"Elevator," Levi says, and he takes off. You jog after him, fingernails pinching into your palms. When you're at the elevator, he presses the button to call for it, and the two of you are forced to wait.
You shift anxiously from foot to foot. "Who?" Levi asks.
"Who, what?" you ask, watching the glowing red number outside the elevator change as it moves to your floor.
"Who's in District 12 that you're looking for?"
You frown at him. How does he know?
Levi raises his eyebrows at you. "I know you said you have no one," he says, "but that's not the reaction of someone who has no one."
