NEW START
"You are fired." my boss said
"What?" the question came out with a tiny voice crack.
"Look Mili, you know the company hasn't been doing well and we were told to dismiss some workers… I know you are one the best employees here but there is nothing I can do. I'm sorry." she looks at me apologetically.
I can't believe this is happening. I mean, I didn't plan to stay here forever since I want to do music for a living but I still needed a job for now.
"I understand." I look down at my tangled hands. "It was a pleasure to work here, thank you." My faint smile is enough to cover my disappointment because my boss seemed to ease more with my words.
I leave her office and head straight to the elevator quickly clicking on my floor button.
Once the elevator opens I go to my desk and start grabbing my stuff to leave.
I try to calm down by telling myself that it isn't the end of the world and that it's okay, I will be able to find another job. Maybe getting fired is a good thing, reorganizing my plans and trying new things.
Some coworkers are leaving too, I feel bad for them. Some already have families and their lives put together.
As I'm leaving my first instinct is to call my best friend.
"Hey babe-"
"I got fired." I say out loud for the first time letting It sink in.
"Oh." I hear Ana's voice on the other line.
"Yeah." my lips pursed together as I open the door of my car and sit on the driver's seat.
"Are you okay?" Her tone is soft and comforting.
"I… don't know…?" I really don't.
"Awh babe, I'm sorry, it's gonna be okay there are a lot of jobs out there you know? I bet you'll find one you really like."
"I know, thank you Ana. Do you wanna have a KDrama night? We can order and drink, I could reallyyy use a drink right now…'' I mumbled the last part.
"Of course! Your place?"
"Yes, we gotta use it while I can afford it right?" Ana chuckles lightly at my comment.
"Well I'll see you at 8pm then. Bye~"
"Bye bye." I hang up the call and start the engine.
There is only one thing that can cure my sadness right now.
Coffee.
—
The familiar bell rings as I open the door and the smell of freshly brewed coffee welcomes me in.
It smells like inner peace here.
I look around to try to spot the coffee shop owner and find him inside the very small pantry where he keeps most of his supplies.
There are some people on the tablets outside drinking coffee and the only person sitting inside is Seungmin.
"Hey Mili." Seungmin greets me with a small smile.
"Hello Minnie." I return the smile.
"Wait- Mili is there?" Chan's faint voice is heard.
He finally walks out the pantry, tripping and almost falling, with his hair all messy.
Cute.
"Hi." Chan smiles at me.
"Hi Chan." I walk towards the country and sit on one of the benches.
"Hey, come here, your hair is all messy." Chan leaned in on the counter.I moved his hair to make It a bit more presentable even though it was cute the way It was before.
"What were you doing there? WWIII?" I chuckle at the state his hair was.
"The real question is what are YOU doing here at this hour, weren't you supposed to be working right now?" He finally looks up.
"Oh, yeah Mili, by this time you would be working." Seungmin also states.
"Well, guys you see… I got fired."
Chan's eyes widen and Seungmin gets up to bring his cup to the counter.
"Why though?" Seungmin asks, sitting facing me.
"They had to dismiss some employees, the company isn't doing really well." I smile once again but this time it doesn't work, at least not with Chan.
"Are you okay? I know you were saving money to rent a recording studio to make some music."
He starts preparing a drink."Yeah I am, but I guess I'll have to put that on hold until I find another job." I look down to my hands.
"Oh Chan was just talking about how he could use some extra help here at the cafe, isn't that right?" Seungmin lays his hand on my shoulder and looks at Chan who has his back turned to us while he assembles the drink.
"Yes that is true." He puts whipping cream on top of the drink, and draws something with caramel.
"Are you interested?" Chan finally turns to face us and puts the drink in front of me and sticks a straw in It. It was iced coffee with extra cream and a smiley face.
How did he know this was exactly what I wanted?
"Well yes, wouldn't you mind? " I look up at him, my eyes glowing with hope.
"Of course not, you are one of my best friends, but I do need to check your CV first." he pointed at me jokingly.
"Really? Oh my god! Chan you are an angel!" I jump and hug him through the counter, Chan immediately hugs me back putting his arms around me.
I pull away and smile at him, still holding on to his arms while his hands slid from my back to waist. His eyes were staring at mine softly, his dimples were showing and his lips were in that little smile that he does.
"Okay!" we were brought back to reality by Seungmin, and my cheeks heated up suddenly "I have to get going, but I'll see you guys later. Bye!" He waved while walking to the door.
I finally took a sip of my coffee and hummed because It was perfect, he even reminded to put in a bit of vanilla flavour.
"Is it good?" Chan is still smiling.
"Always! But how did you know I wanted this?" I say taking sips in the middle of the sentence.
"Mili, you literally only ask for that coffee." His mocking tone showed.
"That 's not true! In the winter I ask for spiced lattes." I smugly state and take another sip.
"Right, how could I forget that? You made me do It even though they weren't on the menu." He side eyes me, that sassy side of him showing.
There was a small silence while Chan cleaned the counter and took Seungmin's cup to put it in the dish washing machine.
I watched him clean, and tidying up everything and then finally put his attention back to me.
"You're starring Channie." I returned the glance to him. "Do you want me to clean up your drool?" We both chuckle.
"I was just checking If my next employee is pretty enough to bring in new customers."
"Does that mean I'm hired?" My voice tone goes slightly up with my excitement.
"I still need to check your CV."
"Awh come on!"
