I am going to make Theo an educated person. Although, continuing with the rich girl, poor boy trope.

Theo would have gone to university on a scholarship and was here in London to join Gray's inn to become a barrister. But in the gap between the end of university and before getting accepted at the inn, he works at the printing press because he can't afford anything otherwise. So he works at the press so that he can earn a living and also because he gets easy access to publishing his work pamphlets about rights and equality.

Besides, it makes little sense to make him uneducated or anything else cause he must have had some kind of education to write such a good and articulate piece of work about rights and laws.
