Theo and Eloise had always known that their relationship was risky. But when Eloise had stopped visiting things changed.
"You don't understand," he said to Eloise, his voice rising with anger. "It's not just your social standing that's at risk. It's mine, too."
Eloise was taken aback by Theo's words. She had always known that their relationship could cause a scandal, but she had never considered the consequences for Theo.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"The queen warned you against treason, they were here to look for evidence, I was almost thrown out," Theo said. "If anyone found out about our relationship, they could accuse me of treason, too. And as a printer's assistant, I don't have the protection of a noble family like you do."
Eloise felt a lump form in her throat. She had never thought about the risks that Theo was taking by seeing her in secret.
"I'm sorry," she said softly. "I didn't think about how this could affect you."
Theo softened at Eloise's words, realizing that she truly cared about him and their relationship.
"I know you didn't," he said, taking her hand in his. "But we have to be careful from now on. We can't risk being seen together in public. And we have to make sure that no one finds out about us."
Eloise nodded in agreement, determined to do whatever it took to keep their relationship safe. She knew that their love was worth any sacrifice, and she was willing to make those sacrifices to be with Theo.
Together, they vowed to be more careful than ever before. They knew that the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but they were determined to make it work.
