Home at last - Diluc

After a long day at work I had finally finished for the day and I couldn't wait to get back home and take a much needed rest. My limbs were sore from use, being a Knight of Favonius really came with it's fair share of physical demands as well as paperwork.

I arrived at Dawn Winery just as the sun had started to set. I made my way to my front door, knocking sharply once to inform Adelinde that I had returned. The door way quickly opened but it was Kate who greeted me instead. "Oh mistress y/n, you're finally back!" "Finally?" I questioned, worry rose into my voice and I made my way into the mansion. "Oh no need to worry Mistress y/n" she giggled, following me inside. "It's just that you are back later than usual and Master Diluc seemed more down at dinner time. I don't think he is accustomed to eating with out you." "Oh" I smiled. Damn I loved that man. "I'll be sure not to keep him waiting any longer then" I laughed "do you know where perhaps Adelinde is? I said glancing around. "I'm just used to her answering the door" "She's currently fetching Master Diluc a glass of grape juice mistress"

"thank you, Kate"

Kate nodded once and then left. I stepped fully into the foyer of the mansion and removed my gloves, placing them on the table by the door. I undid the laces of my boots and pulled them off hopping on one foot as to not loose my balance. Tucking my boots under an arm as to not get the floor dirty, I crossed the foyer to the oak staircase which lead to to the upper rooms including mine and Diluc's bedroom. I ascended the staircase gripping the polished wood banister with my free hand with practised ease.

Our bedroom was the second room on the left of the landing and I remember Diluc telling me he had chosen it for the views it had over the vineyard and how him and Kaeya used to sneak out of his window to sword fight in the meadow nearby.

I knocked. I heard a quiet "come in" before I turned the brass handle to enter our bedroom. When I entered, the warmth from the fire place rose to greet me from behind the grate. I placed my boots by the door, they would need polishing later before my shift tomorrow. 

My husband sat at his desk with his back to me his usual low pony was gone instead replaced by the sight of his red hair down and flowing over his back. His pen scratching gently on the paper and his eyebrows ever so slightly scrunched in concentration. It was then I took a moment to really appreciate how lucky I was to have married him. I couldn't have asked for a better, warmer more loving husband. He was my beloved and my companion we were whatever each of us needed the other to be.

"You can put it over there please Adelinde" Diluc waved vaguely with his left hand to an empty space on the desk, his back still facing me.

I giggled under my breath and walked over to him making sure my footsteps were heard and I stood behind him placing my hands in his hair and letting the strands run through my fingers soothingly. Diluc stiffened in surprise but relaxed quickly once he realised it was me. He sat there for a few moments without turning around, not moving as I just continued to run my hands through his hair, untangling any knots gently with my fingers until he turned around and I stopped.

"My darling" he said smiling at me. His eyes reflected the warmth of the flames in the fireplace. "Sorry if I kept you waiting too long" I apologised. "Not at all, I know you had important matters to attend to" he smiled again before moving his chair back a little so his body was angled towards me. "Come here" he patted his leg. I sat so he could wrap his arms around me and I rested my head back on his shoulder.

"I missed you" he said, his breath ticking me face.

I grinned. "So I've heard" "Kate said you looked down at dinner."
"Did she now?" He chuckled "well she would be right...but now that I have you all to myself...-"

He swiftly stood picking me up bridal style, the movement causing the chair to fall back with a clatter. He walked us over to our bed and gently placed me down before climbing on beside me. He immediately gathered me into his arms, folding me into him and let out a sigh of contentment.

We lay like that for a few moments before I started to reminded myself of my chore that needed doing. I slowly tried to pry myself free from his grip but it was no use, he only gripped me tighter.

"Wha-Diluc, I really need to get up" I said?
"Why..." he mumbled into my back, snuggling tighter. "Why? I need to polish my boots for tomorrow, you know how Huffman gets when-"

"Tomorrow" he replied as I turned over to face him.

"But my boots! Diluc I-" "tomorrow.. do them tomorrow..." he took advantage of me having turned over to snuggle deeper into my arms as his eyes fluttered shut and a minute later I felt his arms go slack.

I sighed.

For a man that was bent on staying up all night working himself to the bone, he sure fell asleep quickly. I was glad though, I had begun to worry that all his late night 'dark night hero' work would make him even more exhausted than usual. I carefully slid myself from his embrace careful not to wake him before wondering over to the desk picking up the fallen chair as I went and completed the rest of the unfinished papers laid out. It only took me a moment to complete them but I knew he would be glad for it in the morning. I quickly removed the rest of my clothing before sliding myself back into bed. His arms automatically wrapping themselves around me again and his head finding the crook of my neck. "Thank you darling... he quietly murmured into my hair. I gently stroked his hair in response until I once again heard his breathing even out.

I smiled to myself, tomorrow would be another day, but tonight, tonight would be for us.

By the time I fell asleep myself I realised that Adelinde never did return with that glass of grape juice...

A/N: I have just come back from a holiday in France! It was very hot (well from my UK perspective) and the village we stayed in was very friendly even though I don't speak much French. 😅
