Under the bridge Maddi tries desperately to calm herself by smoking. But the tears now are just flowing, she sits in the fetal position, bawling her eye's out, and she whimpers quietly to try not to attract any attention to anyone passing by. She feels so utterly alone and she starts thinking about her grandma passing away only last December, she starts remembering how they always used to watch the gore movie marathon together, even though her grandma wasn't too fond of them.
"This will be the first year I watch the marathon without her," Maddi thinks, as she takes a big hit of the joint. She tries hard to hold back more tears. She stays relatively quiet, only quietly mewling. Continuing to whimper as she rocks back and forth, trying to let the weed calm her down. Yet time seems to pass at a snail's pace.
"Please, I just need the relief." She thinks, and finally a wave of warmth washes over her, relief, finally from smoking. Yet she quickly decides to smoke another joint. "I just want to be numb"
After 20 minutes or so, she stands up and reapplies her makeup so no one can see she has been crying. She walks back up to the street and puts her hood up, starting on the long walk home.
She lights up a cigarette, that she has no intentions of smoking just to mask the smell of weed. As she walks down the road from the school, she decides to cut through the church's parking lot. The school is located in the middle of town on a tall hill, with one way in and one way out, that being this road. As she cuts through, she sees the priest, who is pulling up the flag on the flagpole. He looks at her, his eye's filled with disgust .
"You used to be so beautiful Maddi, so innocent. How could you let the darkness take you over?" He asks in as condensing a manner as one can.
"Yeah fuck you too, Father." she retorts, giving him the finger as she walks by.
"You are a sinner. I knew it from the moment I saw you. Your dark makeup, your Devil music and your temptrous clothing. Those who cloak themselves in darkness, and run from the light, are easiest for Satan to entice!" He shouts, as Maddi exits the parking lot. She doesn't respond.
"Fuck you and your god, if he loved me so fucking much, he wouldn't have let me be born." She thinks in her head and doesn't voice it, knowing it would be a futile effort anyway."Satan will come for you. You will go to the pit for your sins!" The priest yells. She puts her headphone's back on and she cuts through Wesley's neighborhood. It's close to the school, and is one of the more affluent neighborhoods in town. All the homes on the street are a nuclear families wet dream, all two stories house, picket fence adorned and bordering on mansion statues. Luscious green lawns obviously obsessed over by their owners; yet maintained by some company that under pays it's hard working staff.
In her heart Maddi felt disgusted by the mere sight of it, reminding her that this world is doomed by hubris, and contention for one's fellow sapian, the tired refrain of "if I am not doing better than another, I am the lesser", like leeches eating each other for supremacy.
Yet she can't help but look at Wesley's house, and want in some fashion to live in it. The house was modern and held many rooms within it. It is a beautiful baby blue coloring, the garage was spacious and held musical equipment as well as the family car. The wonderful kitchen filled with stainless steel appliances, the fridge filled with food and its stairs that lead up to Wesley's room; which for whatever reason Maddi couldn't understand, she loved more than any part of the house.
She thinks to herself if she ever got a chance, that's the kinda place where she would make a family of her own.
"If I did have children..." she thinks, but she fights back tears knowing she will never have children. "...They won't know this pain at the very least." She continues to walk through the neighborhood. "How did I ever become friends with Wes?"
