PART TWO

Shady Hollow Police Department Interview #717 Name: Harvey Reacher By: Officer Jack Cahn 07/19/15 2:34 P.M.

Off. Cahn: Nice of you to be back early, Harvey. I didn't expect you to be waiting in the parking lot when I got here.

Harvey: Uh...yeah, finished lunch early.

Off. Cahn: You don't have to get all shaky again Harvey.

Harvey: I-I found something else.

Off. Cahn: At your apartment? What did you find?

Harvey: Yes. I looked everywhere for the sketchpad, Jack. EVERYWHERE. It was gone. The last time I looked at it was last night...now it's just gone. I realized after some time that I hadn't looked in the place I'd first found it, under the bed in the master bedroom. When I checked that spot, I found something else. T-there was a red tie.

Off. Cahn: Like a suit tie?

Harvey: Yes sir...

Off. Cahn: Do you think Violet could have been involved with any other men?

Harvey: Honestly, I gave it some thought when I saw that tie. I only own two ties, and they're both grey. But I just don't think she'd do something like that to me, especially after I checked her phone.

Off. Cahn: Wait, you checked her phone? I wasn't aware she'd left it.

Harvey: Yeah...I'm sorry I didn't turn it over as evidence, I just didn't want her personal business being sifted through by a bunch of strangers. I guess I sound like a hypocrite for saying that, but it really hadn't crossed my mind to go through it until I found the tie...

Off. Cahn: That's alright Harvey, just tell me what you found on her phone.

Harvey: Uh...o-okay. I went through messages first, nothing out of the ordinary - mostly messages to me or her mom or sister a few states away. When I looked at her call log, I saw something strange. It had a lot of calls to me or to family or friends that were only a few seconds long, like she'd either ended the call or lost reception. We usually get really good reception at the apartment. And then I checked her pictures. The sketchbook didn't matter after I saw the pictures she'd taken throughout the month. The first few of the month were normal, just pictures of animals she'd seen at the vet's office and a few selfies. They started getting weird around the time we had went to the Blue Club and she freaked out. I remember waiting in line to get into the club, and saw a few flashes as she took pictures with Fern. When I saw them on her phone, I smiled because she looked so beautiful. I couldn't help but notice the dark silhouette standing a few streetlights down, just barely hidden by the darkness..

Off. Cahn: Were there more?

Harvey: Only a few after that. One was a picture of me and her she'd taken when we'd gone on a picnic. Again, just a the line of trees in the background, was a tall, dark man. He was still too far away to make out any features...come to think of it, it didn't looked like he even had a face. I know that sounds crazy. There were also a few from her little cousin's birthday party. She stood with a few of her family members behind the birthday boy at the dining room table, smiling as he blew out the candles on his cake. It took a second for the figure outside of the kitchen window to catch my eye. He was closer, but stood behind the wooden fence beside the house. I could see him peeking his faceless head from behind it...the fence is more than 6 feet tall...

Off. Cahn: It sounds like she has a stalker. Maybe he was standing on something to get a better view? A step ladder maybe?

Harvey: Maybe...the last picture in her phone was from Father's Day, a few weeks before she disappeared. Again I was taking the picture, as she stood hugging her Dad's neck. They were in her parent's backyard, having a barbecue. I took the picture in front of the back sliding glass doors. You could see clearly through the living room and foyer to the open front door. Through the screen door, I could see him. He had that tie on Jack. The red tie I found under the bed...he took her. He TOOK MY GIRLFRIEND!

Off. Cahn: Woah, ok Harvey. Calm down. Let's talk about those events you mentioned in the pictures. Did anything weird happen that you remember? Maybe some connection to who this guy is?

Harvey: Uh...actually, yeah. After the birthday party was over, my girlfriend and I stayed with her Aunt for a few days, sort of like a family reunion since we live so far from them. We stayed in the guest room upstairs, it had a fairly new flat screen that her Uncle would usually watch football games on. We'd been watching a movie for an hour when the screen turned to static. It made flashes of green and blue every few seconds and kept going back and forth between the movie and the static. I had gotten up to take a look at it, I'd fixed a few of our TVs before. But there was nothing I could see wrong with it - everything was plugged in, the cable channel was still on, and the thing wasn't more than a month old. I turned to Violet with a puzzled look on my face, but she'd looked terrified. I hadn't noticed the hand she had clamped to her mouth the whole time or the way her eyes were bugging out. I asked her what was wrong and she just shook her head and laid down. I thought she'd fallen asleep but even when I had started to drift off, I could hear her uneven breathing. I knew when I saw the bags under her eyes in the morning that she hadn't slept at all. Maybe the static had reminded her of Poltergeist or something?...I don't know. She just seemed so scared by it.

Off. Cahn: This just keep getting weirder, Harv. Violet seems to be a mystery herself, huh?

Harvey: She is. But she wasn't before - before all this. Then she started closing herself off, turning from the bubbly extrovert I knew to an insomniac introvert. When we'd made the long road trip to her hometown for Father's Day, it happened again. But this time we were in the car. We'd been driving through miles and miles of cornfields and farms, listening to the radio to keep us occupied. I have to admit, this one scared me, too. All of a sudden the volume of the radio turned up, blasting through the speakers. We were both startled. Then it turned down again, almost too quiet to hear. It kept switching volumes, the channel turned to complete static. What scared me wasn't the radio, though. I have a touchscreen GPS in my car. It started malfunctioning, too...I heard the robotic voice say take the next exit about a hundred times. And then I saw the destination that had been submitted. Except it wasn't a destination...it just said "DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU". Violet was in hysterics when she saw this. I couldn't help but to look in the rear view mirror. Nothing was there. All I could do was mark it all down as my car malfunctioning, but that seemed kind of silly in my head...I was just looking for answers.

Off. Cahn: Could be possible that someone hacked into the car's computer system...but you're right, I'm kind of skeptical about it, too. This is definitely a lot of information to take in, Mr. Reacher.

Harvey: No doubt. The pieces just don't fit, I keep trying to add it all up, but it doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense. I feel like I'm losing my mind...

Off. Cahn: I think you need rest, Harv. Here's my notepad and a pen, I'd appreciate it if you'd give me the numbers of Matty Parker and Fern Derekson. Maybe they can give me more information.

Harvey: Sure...here they are.

Off. Cahn: Thank you, Mr. Reacher. Now go home and get some rest. Come back whenever you can tomorrow and we'll talk some more. I'm also going to try to talk to your friends, tomorrow. See what they know. Have a good one, Harvey. Keep an eye out.

Harvey: Um, okay...I will.
