His arms were crossed against his chest as the car bumped and rumbled over the road. George didn't spare Dream a glance as he stared defiantly out the window. He wasn't going to listen to whatever sorry excuse Dream had come up with.
"I didn't mean to frighten you."
George did a double take. That was not what he expected to fall from Dream's lips at all.
"You didn't."
"I meant from last night."
"You didn't."
A sigh. A long pause.
"George. If you want to end this all as soon as possible, you're going to need to stop closing up after something happens. I can't–"
George glared harder at the moving sidewalk. He would never admit that Dream was partially right. He did shut down when something went wrong and didn't want to worry about fixing it.
"Then let's end it tonight."
"I... can't tonight."
Figured.
"Why..." George breathed a calming breath. "Why did you try to kiss me last night?"
Dead silence. Only the car humming beneath them filled the stunned air that followed.
"I thought.."
"You didn't think! You only did!" Tears threatened at the dam of his eyelids, "Did you even think about what I might have thought?"
"I'm sorry."
George's breath caught in his throat.
He was only making things worse by blowing up at Dream for something that wasn't entirely his fault. In fact, George was more to blame here.
He didn't act upon his feelings, Dream did. So what? Good for him. So then WHY THE FUCK DID GEORGE NOT LET HIM.
"No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for agreeing that night and for blowing up at you yesterday and today. I'm just... tired." Was his lame excuse. His apology was genuine though and he wanted Dream to understand that. He didn't have the energy to fight any longer.
"I'm glad you agreed that night." Dream's voice was so quiet, George almost didn't catch it over the hum of the engine.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm glad I met you. You're fun to be around George, believe it or not yourself. I enjoy seeing you even under weird circumstances and there's never a dull moment. I'm sorry it has to end this way. I just hope, maybe.." He paused, taking a deep shaky breath, "we can still be friends after all this?"
It was a question and George wasn't sure how to answer it.
There were a few beats of silence. "I would have to think it over." George said hesitantly. His heart hurt at the words. He really did want to continue being friends, but his trust was shattered, feelings unraveled and discombobulated. He needed some time to gather the parts of himself that were scattered about and piece them all back together again.
"Okay."
"Okay?"
Dream let out a small sigh, turning the wheel into the driveway of his big house. George furrowed his brows at the sight before remembering Dream had no idea where he lived. "I understand you need time to think and again, I'm sorry for almost...kissing you."
There it was again. Why was he so sorry for something George was almost half sure he himself wanted?
"How did you even find me?" George ignored his apology, blowing it off as casual concern.
