I left my house and walked down the long dirt road to his house. I was sure he would be home and I needed his help with something on my family farm and I couldn't lie I just wanted to see him. As I walked up to the porch I knocked on the screen door. The front door was open and I could see in the house. No one answered when I knocked so I knocked again calling in the house.
"Jimmy! Jimmy Dobyne!" I yelled. I heard someone start to come to the door only it wasn't Jimmy, it was his father. He saw me and smiled.
"Hey Tillie! What are you doing here?" Mr. Dobyne asked. I could tell he was drunk. I sighed.
"Mr. Dobyne is Jimmy home?" I asked and he chuckled.
"Jimmy? What do you want Jimmy for?" He asked and I sighed.
"I need some help on my farm and I feel like Jimmy could be the one to do it." I said.
"Tillie, you shouldn't be trying to run that farm on your own. You and your mama need to just sell it." Mr. Dobyne said and I groaned. This is something my mother and I had heard since my father passed away from drinking entirely too much his liver failed on him. Jimmy was always kind enough to come help out mama and I. We did really ask too much of him but he always said he didn't mind.
"Mr. Dobyne is Jimmy here or not?" I asked getting annoyed.
"He left about half an hour ago with Fisher Willow." Mr. Dobyne said and I sighed.
"Fisher..." I said looking at the porch.
"You know she likes him right? She is a good match for him too. Him being the Governors Grandson and everything around Fisher's father that happened. She wants to be intimate with him, he told me...-" Mr. Dobyne started to say and I stop him.
"Mr. Dobyne that is not appropriate for you to be discussing with me. Can you please just tell Jimmy I stopped by?" I asked and without waiting for an answer I just walked off the porch.
"Remember what I said about you and your mama selling that farm!" He called after me. I ignored him and walked down the long driveway and then the long road home. Once I walked in the house my mother was talking to a gentleman.
"Oh Tillie, there you are." She said excited and came over to me. "Where were you?" She asked in whisper.
"Down at the Dobynes. I need Jimmy's help with the barn door." I said and she sighed.
"Leave that boy alone. Any way I have someone I would like you to meet. This is Mr. Derrick Gregory Sutton." My mama said and I smiled at the man.
"Nice to meet you." I said and he got up and walked over to me taking my hand and kissing it.
"The pleasure is all mine Ms. Carter." He said and I smiled.
"Tillie please." I looked at my mama. "Can I ask what's going on here?" I asked.
"When I was cleaning for Mr. Sutton's father the other day he mentioned that that Derrick needed a date for Julie Fenstermaker's Halloween party. You need to get out in society and this could be a great opportunity." Mama said and I groaned.
"Mama...I don't have anything to wear to these parties. We aren't exactly high society." I explained and she sighed.
"I can cover you there Tillie. My mother thinks it's a great idea to bring you. She loves your mama and was heartbroken when your father passed away. She would be willing to help you find a dress. She has plenty as does my sister." Derrick said and I sighed.
"Do I have a choice?" I asked and my mama shook her head no.
"Well when do we go?" I asked and Derrick smiled standing up and offering me his arm.
"We can go now if you would like?" He asked and I nodded. I kissed my mamas cheek and we walked out of the house. He opened my door for me and we headed down my driveway. As we were driving down the road I saw Jimmy driving Fishers car and he noticed who I was with when we passed him.
"Jimmy Dobyne and Fisher Willow. That's a pairing I will never understand." Derrick said and I looked at him.
"Pairing?" I questioned but he chose to ignore me. We drove to his family home that I had been to before when I helped mama clean it. Once we walked in his mother met us at the door.
"Oh Tillie, so lovely to see you." She said and hugged me. This woman drove me up a wall. Fake high society and I knew she was sleeping with my father before he died. It was a secret to no one except my mama, I don't think she knew at all. I looked at Mrs. Sutton and smiled.
"Nice to see you as well ma'am." I said and she smiled.
"Why don't we go up to the guest room and try on some dresses and find you something to wear." Mrs. Sutton said and I nodded.

After I had left the Sutton home after finding a dress to wear to the party I just wanted to make sure the horses were fed when I returned home. When I walked back to the barn I saw him...Jimmy Dobyne working on my barn door.
"Thank you for coming." I said approaching him.
"No problem. My father said you came looking for me and your mama said the door needed fixed." Jimmy said and I nodded and looked at the ground.
"If I had known you were out with Fisher Willow I wouldn't have come looking for you." I said and he sighed.
"Like you were out with Derrick Sutton?" Jimmy asked and I sighed.
"I'm escorting him to a party this weekend Jimmy, that's all. According to your father you are wanting to be intimate with Fisher." I said and Jimmy grumbled.
"Tills you know not to listen to my father when he is drunk." Jimmy said. "It was like we didn't trust your father around other women when he was drunk." Jimmy said. My eyes filled with tears and I stormed away so he wouldn't see me cry. "Fuck! Tills!" Jimmy yelled running after me but I was already halfway up the rope ladder to the loft. Once I made it up Jimmy tried to come up but I pulled it up out of his grasp.
"Leave me alone Jimmy. Leave the door, I will get it." I said and he sighed. I didn't hear Jimmy say anything or even leave but when I peaked over the side he was gone.
"Did you forget there is a ladder on the side." Jimmy said and I turned to see him. I groaned.
"Jimmy Dobyne get out of my hayloft. Go tend to Fisher." I said and he groaned.'
"Now you cut that out Tillie, you know I didn't mean to say it." Jimmy said.
"But you did. You think I like knowing what kind of man my father was? You think I like going into town and hearing the whispers? No I don't Jimmy. Why couldn't he just love me and mama and stay away from all of it." I said and Jimmy sat beside me. I placed my head on his shoulder. Jimmy and I were best friends since we were kids and up until now. I liked Jimmy a lot more than just a friend. I wasn't sure if he could tell and decided to ignore it or just really couldn't see it but I didn't want to ruin what we had. I needed to change the subject. "You going to this Halloween party?" I asked and he sighed.
"Yes, Fisher asked me to be her escort." Jimmy said and I sighed.
"James Dobyne the 5th escorting her. Sure she is so excited. Governor's grandson and all." I said and stood up.
"Tillie!" Jimmy said and I started going down the other ladder. He didn't chase after me this time.
