Jimmy drove us out to the Levy and parked the truck overlooking the water.
"Jimmy, what are we doing here?" I asked and he sighed.
"I just wanted to go somewhere we could talk that was private, quiet and if you run you won't be getting home until the late hours of the night." Jimmy said and I sighed.
"So basically bringing me out here against my will..." I said and Jimmy groaned.
"Damnit Tillie, why do you have to make this so difficult? I just want to talk to you about what Fisher said last night and why I missed our meeting today." Jimmy said.
"I don't want to talk about Fisher or anyone with the last name of Willow." I said and he looked at me confused.
"What happened?" Jimmy asked and I groaned.
"After I ran from you today, when I got home there was a man on my porch taking to mama. He handed her an envelope and walked away. It was hush money Jimmy, from the Willows! Fisher thinks I obviously something about that explosion her father caused. I know nothing but Jimmy she is trying to pay me and mama off!" I said and Jimmy said and hung his head.
"You brought this upon yourself Tillie. You shouldn't have mentioned anything at the party last night." Jimmy said.
"You have got to be kidding me Jimmy! You are blaming me after everything she said?" I said pissed off.
"No Tills, that's not what I mean. All I'm saying is I know you and your mama could really use the money. Just accept it and do what you need to do. You keep quiet they may keep paying you. I can make sure of that." Jimmy said and I groaned.
"I don't want their money Jimmy." I mumbled knowing he heard me.
"Well I guess not when you have Derrick Sutton come calling for you." Jimmy said and I groaned.
"Jimmy..." I said and he shook his head.
"No the Sutton's are good people, you should be so lucky to have him."
"I don't want him Jimmy! I want...-" I said and stopped myself.
"You want what? What do you want Tills?" Jimmy asked.
"Everything to be like it was before daddy started drinking and we lost everything. I just want my life again." I said and Jimmy sighed. I placed my head on his shoulder and he just let me.
"Tillie, I think there is somethings you need to know." Jimmy said.
"What?" I asked.
"Why I didn't meet you today." Jimmy said and I lifted my head.
"Why Jimmy?" I asked unsure of wanting to know the answer.
"Last night after you left the party Fisher and I left soon after. She wanted to come here and park at the Levy. She likes the moon reflecting on the water. Anyways, we parked." Jimmy said and I knew what he meant by parked.
"You parked..." I trailed off.
"Tillie..."
"You think you can bring one girl here one night and me another and park with me as well?!" I asked upset.
"It's not like...-" Jimmy was saying.
"Jimmy Dobyne I thought you had more class than that and I thought you had more respect for me. Park here with Fisher Willow, get intimate with her then bring me here in hopes to do the same." I said and smacked his across the face. Jimmy grabbed both my wrists.
"God Matilda you can be one of the most stubborn, hardheaded women I have ever met in my life! If you would have let me finish explaining myself you would have heard that Fisher and I just stayed out talking." Jimmy said.
"And what could you have talked about all night long Jimmy? Her life can't be that interesting." I said. Jimmy released the hold on my wrists.
"We talked about a lot of things. We talked about my daddy and his job, what the future could hold for Willow and I and moving mama to a better facility." Jimmy said and I looked at him. Every time he mentioned his mother the pain shot through his eyes to his whole face. Him mother had a mental break right before my father passed and was committed to an asylum.
"Do you go and visit her still Jimmy?" I asked and he nodded.
"Daddy doesn't think it's a good idea anymore." Jimmy said and I shook my head.
"Seeing you does her good. Keep going Jimmy." I said and he nodded.
"Tills, I think my future is supposed to be with Fisher..." Jimmy said and I hung my head. "Like yours is meant to be with Derrick Sutton."
"Will you stop saying that! Damn it Jimmy!" I yelled getting out of his truck and walking to the riverbank, he quickly followed.
"What do you want me to stay Tills? This is the way it has to be. We have to make up for our parents mistakes. We have to marry good people." Jimmy said.
"Why is it on us?" I asked and Jimmy sighed.
"It just is."
"But why?!"
"With everything your daddy did to your family name you need to marry a good name to save face." Jimmy said. I balled up my first and punch him this time.
"I have to hear it from everyone else Jimmy Dobyne I didn't need to hear it from you!" I screamed and ran up the road we drove down as Jimmy stood there holding his jaw cussing under his breath, regretting that he taught me how to punch. I ran as long as my feet and legs would let me. I knew if I stayed on the main road Jimmy would find me so I took the back way home that would take me through the swamp but I didn't care. Jimmy was right I didn't get home until the last hours of the night so I quietly walked in the door and closed it, locking it up and heading to bed to just cry myself to sleep. Jimmy had hurt me, he never brought up my daddy's indiscretions, he was my friend...I wanted him to be more but now I didn't know where we would be.
