The following work of fanfiction is set entirely in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). If any Marvel comic book inferences are found to be implied, they are unintentional and should not be seen as Easter eggs. My interest is entirely in the characters as they have been portrayed on screen. I have taken ideas from various sources, to include movies and series, random online comments, and my own often ridiculous imagination.
The character of Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier is of interest to me on many levels and I see him as one of the most complex characters in the MCU. The more I thought about him, and what he went through, the more awful all of it became and I admired his ability to break free from it. I wanted to look at how Bucky became the Winter Soldier, how the Winter Soldier would have operated throughout the decades, and how Bucky would have had to wrestle with everything he had done as the Winter Soldier in Wakanda. An identity, even one created by force, in place for so long would invariably fight its own destruction. I also wanted to delve into the Winter Soldier as an intelligence asset, not just as an assassin, and imagine how he would have been able to operate in almost any environment he found himself in. I tried to be accurate as possible when using historical dates, names and places, even as I created fictional scenarios in those situations.
Fair warning, what follows can be seen as disturbing in places, and that is the point. I hope a few people can take this small story as I intended: a way to explore a fascinating character in some depth. For those who hate it, I respect that opinion, but I have no interest in being subjected to the abuse of people who apparently have nothing better to do with their lives but bring down others.
To all those who, like me, spend a large amount of time thinking of fictional characters as though they are real people, who become invested in the lives and actions of those people, I hope we all have many more characters in the future to engage with.
