CRUEL SUMMER!
chapter eleven.( you're holding me like water in your hands. )
"You're like, openly checking him out right now. You know that, right?"
A smirk slowly twitches on my lips. I glance back at Sarah, sly and amused as I meet her cocky grin. The both of us are inside the small surf shack in John B's backyard. We're meant to be putting new batteries into all of the flashlights for tonight, but I'll admit that I haven't exactly been providing much help in the task.
"He's nice to look at," I say simply, like a verbal shrug.
"He's wearing your jacket."
He is wearing one of my jackets. He asked to borrow it this morning before we left the house.
"I thought you learned to pack a bag," I had said offhandedly, smirking when he rolled his eyes.
"This was a spontaneous stay. How was I supposed to know that you'd be seducing me into spendin' the night?" He replied, a mockingly innocent smile on his face, because we both know that he would've stayed over no matter what the circumstances had ended up entailing.
So. Now he wears my jacket. A dark grey zip-up that fits rather baggy and oversized on my body, but seems to fit perfectly on his.
"It looks better on him," Sarah says, a coy smirk on her face, as if able to read my thoughts. "You should let him keep it."
I chuckle, because I'm sure that he's already long claimed the garment as his own.
"How was your sleepover?" I ask her, smiling at the way she rolls her eyes.
She scoffs, but it's more of a chuckle. "Better than I would've expected. Was it your idea?"
I tilt my head at her, amused. "It seems like something I'd come up with?"
"Leaving me stranded overnight with someone who practically wanted me dead? Absolutely."
I laugh a little, because she's right.
However, tensions don't seem to be running all that high anymore between Sarah and Kiara, which is good. Now that that's done with, we can finally move forward with the plan.
"It wasn't my idea," I admit, scoffing lightly in amusement, unaware of the approaching footsteps even as Sarah's gaze fixes behind me and a smirk tugs at her lips. "But nevertheless, it worked, didn't it?"
"What worked?"
Something about his tone sounds distinct. There's an intriguing hint of possessiveness to it, and an overall distaste that he fails to play off. I pick up on it immediately, and it has me smiling. pleased the moment I hear it.
His eyes settle onto mine when I turn to him, a hidden jealousy swimming within the oceans of his irises. I can see right through him, and he knows it too. I smirk, ever so faintly, as I let my gaze travel down to his lips.
Quite frankly, it should require some sort of consequence, being so striking. His eyes, his hands, and his lips—
"Leaving them stranded together," I reply, silently amused as I take a second to admire him as a whole. He has my jacket zipped up half way up his chest, displaying his collarbones. I'm not trying very hard to be subtle, but I think he notices either way, judging by the way his lips quirk up into a content, though evidently smug smile.
He makes a small hum of acknowledgment, nodding in agreement before he turns to Sarah. "To be fair, I was mostly convinced she wouldn't kill you."
