Max's POV:
"Max!" El shouted happily as he pulled me by my arm into her cabin. As I walked through the doorway I studied the front room. It had wooden walls and dusty furniture.
El continued to pull me through the house. "My dads not home yet but he will soon, but he'll leave us alone." She explained. El was wearing her hair down and fluffy pajama pants along with a black t shirt. Her bare feet padded across the wooden floor as she continued to babble about her day and her house. "Sorry for the mess, my rooms better."
I chuckled and she turned back to look at me. "Its great, El." I said with a genuine smile. She immediately grinned and opened the closest door to us. We walked in and I admired El's room. Her room had colorful drawings spread across the walls with a beautiful blanket on her bed. My room was nothing like this. My room reminded me of a prison but with a window to safety. I turned back to her. "It's amazing!" She smiled and pulled me onto the bed. We both settled on her mattress and I finally remembered why I came here.
"Oh yeah," I started. "I brought candy. Her eyes immediately lit up and she smiled while letting out a small squeal. I loved how happy El was. Almost everytime I've talked to her she's smiling. I put my full pillow case on the bed and we instantly dug our hands inside. We pulled out the candy and devoured it. I stuffed the chocolate I grabbed into my mouth while we laughed. El quickly stopped laughing and looked right at my cheek. Her eyes widened and my laughing faded out as well as I realized what she had discovered.
El slowly lifted her hand to my face, eyebrows furrowed in concentration. "What happened?" She tore her eyes from my cheek to look at my blue eyes.
I chuckled nervously and she gave me a look. "I ran into a door frame, silly me." She looked like she didn't believe me but let it go. She eyed me suspiciously why slowly shoving a Hershey bar into her mouth.
"Yes... Silly."
I got up and smiled at her, "Next year we should try to convince your Dad to let you come with me." She shot up to stand next to me, shock written on her face.
"You want me to go trick or treating with you?" I smiled.
"Of course," Her face grew with a smile.
"We're friends right?" El asked. I grinned widley.
"We better be," I joked, "Best friends." I promised and I saw the joy in her eyes.
"Right." She agreed. Her eyes lit up again at an idea. "Do you want to spend the night?" I thought to Niel. Waiting at home to beat me senseless after going trick or treating. I thought of Billy returning, likely drunk, to our pathetic household. I thought of my mom, to terrified to intervene when Billy and Niel would fight that night, her look of helplessness burned into my memory. I smiled fondly at the thought of staying the night at El's. Smiling and laughing until sleep overtook us, watching movies, and singing horribly to songs on the radio. It all sounded perfect. So that's exactly what I did. I stayed with El and we had the best time. I was laying on her bed while she danced to a song that was playing and I laughed loudly.
She laughs too and the song ends. She crashes on the space next to me and we read a comic book until I see El fell asleep. I smiled softly at her and climbed over her peaceful body to walk across the room and turn to lights out but I wanted to make a call before I went to sleep. I creaked open El's door slowly in hopes to not wake her. I shuffled through the doorway and to the phone I had spotted when we were making ego waffles earlier. I picked it up and found a phone book next to the couch. I quickly flipped to the H's. Hamiltons, Hargreeves, Hargrove. Ew, no. Ah, I thought when my eyes stumbled to the person's I had been searching for. I quickly dialed in the numbers and leaned against the wall while I waited. After a few rings the chime was stopped.
"Hello?" A groggy voice asked into the phone. I grinned in satisfaction.
"Steve, hey its Max."
"Oh, hey Max." I could hear the tiredness fade from his voice as he became more alert. "Whats up?"
"Nothing really, I was just wondering if you could bring me back to my house in the morning." I replied. "O-or you don't have to. Haha" I laughed awkwardly. "You just have a car and I can't walk back-" He interrupted me with his own laugh.
"Yeah, of course. What time should I be there." I sighed in relief.
"Could you come around 7:30?" I planned that If I got back at 7:45 I could get ready in time and hitch a ride with Billy to school.
"Yeah, sure." I smiled and said thank you and goodbye as I could tell sleep was calling his name. I was about to put the book back when I dropped it on the floor, I scrambled to pick it up but I saw a familiar last name. The book was flipped to the S page. Sinclair was boldly printed and I rolled my eyes as I dialed in the number once more.
