character introductions

Whispers rippled through the village, an inescapable, almost suffocating murmur that dominated every conversation. The news was unavoidable, and the chatter seemed ceaseless. The guards began to distribute flyers, and people flocked to each one, crowding around with fervent curiosity. The once-thriving throngs had vanished, and so had the flyers, leaving a void in their wake. It was no surprise; the King had finally passed, leaving the kingdom in need of a new leader—[Name]. A ceremony was set for a week hence, and attendance was encouraged, although not all were equally enthused.

In the midst of this, a solitary shop attracted a hopeful crowd, only to dash their expectations. Paloverde, the shop's owner, loomed over the worn wooden counter, disheartened by a week of scant customers. While he had the occasional sale, it was hardly enough to cover the shop's rent. His thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the creaking of the door, and he hastily straightened up to greet his customer. "Hello! Welcome to Subway. Is there anything you would like?" he inquired, addressing his familiar guest, Preston. Preston was a slight figure, with short brown hair, tan skin marked by freckles, and a modest stature—the result of a childhood lacking proper nourishment.

They had known each other for quite some time, and in truth, Preston was the sole reason Paloverde could keep his shop open. Despite his own financial struggles, Preston always went out of his way to contribute just enough money for Paloverde to meet his rent. Preston's kindness was almost unsettling, bordering on revolting at times. Paloverde was grateful, but he couldn't shake the feeling of strange motives behind it all. Did Preston pity him? Did he expect repayment in full one day?

"Hey, have you heard about the upcoming ceremony? It's supposed to be in honor of the new ruler," Preston began, attempting to break the awkward silence. Paloverde replied in a monotone voice, "Yeah, it seems like everyone wants to go. It's kind of overwhelming, you know. Are you planning to attend?" Preston fell into a brief silence, contemplating his response. "Well, I think I am. It should be fun, and there'll be free food. I figure I might as well take advantage of it, and you should too!" Preston said with an oddly optimistic tone. The tall man responded tersely, "Right."

As Paloverde handed Preston his sandwich, Preston paid double the price without a word. Paloverde said nothing as Preston left, an intense, conflicted gaze following his departing figure.

One week remained until the ceremony.
