I was walking toward the dorm after lunch when Jeanine Mathews walked down the hall. She caught my eye, and my eyes found her now organ and green flashing eyes; I had almost forgotten she was a werewolf. I swallowed and gave her a small smile.
"Stephanie Grayson, right?" She asked.
"Um, no, just E." I said with a soft smile.
"I like that." She said then looked down pushing my hair away from my collarbone and pressed her fingers to my tattoo. I awkwardly cleared my throat and moved away from her weirdly warm fingers. "And this," she whispered. "It reminds me of a certain, someone." She eyed me for a moment then turned back to the rest of the people were following her. "Well, I hope you chose carefully, you know, you can't go back." She said and I felt myself nod. Max emerged from one of the hallway doors greeting her, I took my chance and walked away. As I walked down the hall and pushed my hair from my ear I heard Jeanine say 8 words to Max that made my blood run cold.
I'm going to keep my eye on her.It was 8:02 when I was sprinting out the door and toward the train. Jeanine's words stuck in my head, which of course made me late. I was pumping my arms, my legs moving just as fast. I was at the tail of the train when Four emerged, from the now opened door. I looked up at him then kept running. I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction. He raised his eyebrows and stuck his hand out.
Screw it.
I took his hand and his big one found my forearm, I put my hand on his waist and the other on his arm that held mine. In one swift move he pulled me in, I was standing beside him, I forced myself to look at him.
"Thanks," I said.
He nodded then released my arm, "about earlier.."
"Don't mention it." I said simply and turned away and searched for Fallon, Will, Rick, or anyone. I looked back feeling a hand on my shoulder, I smiled at Fallon.
"We were starting to worry about," she said as I wrapped my arms around her.
"Jeanine Mathews gave me a visit." I whispered so quietly I was surprised she heard me. "She said she'll be watching me."
"What is that supposed to me?" Fallon whispered back. I pulled away giving her a shrug.
"I'm scared." I mouthed to her.
"You'll be okay." She mouthed back."The rules are simple." Four said dropping a duffle bag onto the metal floor of the train. "It's just like capture the flag," I had never played but after over hearing some of the other tributes I got the just of it.
"Weapon of choice." Eric pulled up a black pistol and held it up, to show to all.
"Yeah, like that'll hurt." Molly smirked. Eric looked over slowly and shot the gun, out flew a small wooden bullet, right into Molly's left leg. She held back a scream and slowly fell to the floor.
"Have fun digging that out."
"Four and I will be captains, first pick, Four." Four looked around his eyes fell when they got to me.
"I'll take the Stiff," he said. It took me a second to actually move my feet and walk over to Four. My face was blazing.
"Oh," Eric smirked looking over at Four before picking. "I see, you're picking the weakest links so you'll have someone to blame."
"Something like that."
As they both continued to pick I saw a pattern: Eric continued to pick the big and strong people while Four picked the ones that were fast on their feet, and could think fast. I hid my smile behind my hand as the rest of the initiates were picked.I had jumped out of a moving train twice now, once in bright daylight, the other - right now, into the darkness that the night held. I felt a strike of pain corse through my legs as we landed but I kept running until it went away.
"Okay, lights off." Four said as we all huddled together. He pulled our neon orange flag out of his pocket and looked at transfer initiates and vampire born initiates.
"I say we hide the flag, then ambush them once they try and take it," one vampire born initiate said.
"I say we split into two teams," Fallon said as bit the inside of my cheek, "defense and offense."
Everyone else began to speak, I looked over, Four leaned against a near by wall. I had never seen him so relaxed, staring up at the sky with a gun against his chest. I never noticed the slight age difference he had with all the other vampires, he could easily pass for 17 tops while everyone else looked 16. I needed to focus, even if his dark eyes sent chills through me. I cleared my throat as I walked away from the group. I looked around and found myself as the bottom steps of a Ferris wheel, maybe if I were to get to higher ground I would be able to scout out the other teams flag. I started to climb.
I was barley 3 feet off the ground when I heard Four.
"You're not going to jump, are you?" I looked back at him.
"No, just trying to get a better look." I said and kept climbing.
"Good thinking." He said, he put his pistol in his back pocket, he was at my feet, climbing, within seconds. He looked at me, eyebrows raised, when I stopped.
"You don't have to come," I said turning back to him once more.
"Yes, I do." He said, I could barley see his pupils in the dark. "Now hurry up before I second guess myself." I let out a groan and kept climbing. After a moment he finally spoke.
"So, Jeanine Mathews, huh? What'd you do?" I felt my face redden with anger.
"Do you just enjoy prying yourself into my business? Or do you just stick your nose in mine, because yo"-
I was climbing so fast that I didn't even notice the loose bar I had just put my hand on, a strong gust of wind came by, tilting my over the edge until I gasped.
A hand was on my waist, it was a perfect fit. Four's finger tips skimmed my bare skin where they had lifted my black t-shirt. I couldn't feel anything else, only his touch. I heard him mumble something and finally heard myself speak.
"Wh-what'd you ask?"
"I said, 'are you okay?'" I could feel his eyes on me as I nodded. He released me from his firm grip and continued to follow me. After about 5 minutes he stopped and said, "I think this is high enough."
I looked to the South to see nothing but a building, I shook my head, "we have to go higher." I looked back after he still hadn't moved. He looked down and around, panting, his face was pale even under the moon I could see his beautiful face. I turned back to look at him, and tilted my head.
"You're afraid of heights." I said.
"Everyone's afraid of something," he said then looking back up at me.
"I didn't think you were afraid of anything." I said shrugging it off then continued to climb. After we were almost to the top his staggered breaths were getting louder and I had to concentrate on watching my hands and carefully placing my feet on the loose bars.
When we finally got to the end of ladder like strip I climb the bars were they intersected between the carts.
"Gosh, E," he mumbled as he followed. "Are you even human?"
"No, not really." I said harsher than I meant. "Did you forget that you were the one who snapped my neck?"
"That was my blood that brought you back to life," he said. I pulled myself between two bars and looked out at the view. He pulled himself up behind me. I felt his chest against my back, his breath skimmed my neck and my hands became slippery on the bars. "Just so you know." He whispered down at me and made my head spin. I cleared my throat and looked out at the view, I could see all of the other carnival rides, then my eyes laid on a neon green fabric.
"See that?" I said pointing down, "on the top of the bell tower, that's where it is."
"Of course," I heard him mumble. "Okay let's go tell the others." He climbed through the various of bars and I took his warm hand as he helped me down. When I let go my hands felt numb.
