A shadow lurched in a dark alleyway, an animal as well, but not lurching. A black cat hopped onto a trash back which rustled loudly. Their paws slipped and they almost fell, so they dug their claws into it, quickly hopping up onto the dumpster beside it.
The shadows seemed to rise after the cat jumped, a figure, tall and lean, came from a purple portal of shadows. Shadow magic it was. The cat had no idea what had happened, and the person there frightened them. They hissed and srched their back, but the person did not move. They stared at the furry animal, scared for no reason, then stepped over, their own tail twitching in curiousity to the other animal. They were different, cat and monkey.
The monkey reached his hand out slowly, the cat hissed and backed into the wall, but when fingers touched softly behind their ears and scratched, it calmed and a soft pur began to rise loudly. The monkey chuckled, obviously liking this, even with his reputation for being cruel and crazy. He loved cats.
He was a Macaque, the Macaque. And Macaque had a love for cats. He'd never be able to get one for himself of course, so seeing strays was like a light in a dark day, for his days were always dark without anyone around. His days remained that way, he was a loner, after all.
His six ears twitched upon hearing something drop, feet drop, onto the ground down near the end of the dark alley. Macaque turned and took a step back, ready if something or someone popped out and attacked, but no one seemed to want to hurt him. They had no intentions of fighting. Instead, a laugh erupted out of them, leaving both Macaque and his furry friend confused. He squinted his eyes, finally being able to recognize the figure down there.
Macaque groaned and ran a hand over his face, feeling it warm with embarrassment. He had just loved on a cat in front of someone he'd never, ever want to see it.
Monkey King himself stepped out of the dark, still laughing, tears swelling in his eyes. He wiped at them, hysterica finally dying down.
"Wukong." Macaque growled, "What the hell are you doing?"
"You like cats?! I'm sorry, that is hilarious." Wukong just sunk into laughter again, holding his arms around his stomach and leaning forward. "Oh my god, my stomach!" he wheezed.
"Wukong!" Macaque backhanded him right on his head, his furry friend taking a seat to watch this funny sight, as if it could understand it all. It was still purring, waiting for more attention.
"Ow!" Wukong placed a hand over his head and stood up straight, only a couple inches shorter than the other monkey, "What was that for?"
"For spying on me."
"Spyin'? Who, me? Nah." he waved his free hand to try and play it off, "I was.. passing by after visiting MK."
Macaque placed his hands on his hips and glared. He didn't believe him whatsoever.
Wukong gave a teethy grin to try and seem truthful, but it did not work. He sighed and dropped his arms to his sides. "You're right." the Monkey King stepped over and ran his paw through the kitten's fur, then scooped it into his arms. It purred loudly and rested into the touch. "It's true I was passin' by buut, I saw you in the shadows, sooo," he turned and grinned at his former friend, "I decided to see what you were doing!"
Macaque lifted his arms to cross them, watching as Wukong took his place by loving on the stray. "So you were spying."
"Yep."
Macaque shook his head, rolling his eyes as he turned away, planning on walking off, but Wuukong spoke up.
"Hey, do you actually like these things so much?" When Macaque turned he saw Wukong holding the black cat up and looking at it, so Macaque immediately walked over and snatched it away gently.
"Don't hold it like that, you idiot!" He let it down to the groudn, where it twisted and rubbed it's side on Macaque's ankles. He grumbled and grunted, "Yeah... I do. What's the problem? You like.. monkeys."
Wukong stared like Macaque was an absolute dumbass, which what he said was kind of dumb. He was a monkey 'King' after all. "Macaque, I'm their king. I'm going to be around monkeys." he snickered.
The shadow user just looked away, down to the cat curling up at his feet, purring. "Whatever."
"I like cats too, maybe dogs more." Wukong crouched down with his legs against his chest, softly petting the cat to not disturb it while it slowly fell asleep where it was. "I know you don't really care but, I just had thought it'd be nice to get to know each other.." Wukong looked up to Macaque, who was already staring at him, "..again."
Macaque was speechless. He had never thought of rebuilding their friendship after what Wukong did to him. Wukong himself looked hurt, his eyes sparkling in panic and fear that he had just messed up his chance. Macaque gulped. "Er- well." he pulled at the neck of his red cape.
Wukong got up, reeling in a sharp breath. "Macaque, this is weird, I know, rebuilding this shit over a cat—" he paused, laughing softly, "but I've been wanting to ever since we defeated Lady Bone Demon. I had though then.. that you had forgiven me. But we haven't spoken since, Macaque."
The Macaque was still clueless on what to say, letting his.. friend.. continue rambling.
"I feel terrible, everyday. When I retired all I thought about was you, and my regret. I got sick way too much, from guilt. I never left my shack. Monkey's had to check in on me daily because of it."
Macaque felt a lump in his throat, now for sure he had no idea what to do nor say.
"There were other things I had wanted for us, a lot. I'm an idiot for what I did. An asshole." he again stopped, staring into Macaque's eyes, then something sparked in his own. He pressed his lips together anxiously, then grabbed the sides of Macaque's face and pulled him into a passionate kiss, full of sorrow and love. Forbiddon love. Years worth of it. Guilt, sorrow, love.
Macaque's eyes widened as Wukong's closed tightly. He could not react, letting Wukong kiss him. He was stuck like this for a couple seconds, then Wukong slowly moved his face away, looking into shocked eyes.
"Oh- o-oh, I am so sorry. Macaque-"
"No-" Macaque interrupted.
"What?"
He swallowed down everything, every bit of confusion, anger, sadness, and left room for only one thing.
He lifted his paw and placed it atop of Wukong's, making his face warm up.
"It's fine, Peaches."
Peaches.
Wukong felt like a fire had started inside of him, every last bit of his body warmed up. Peaches. He never thought he'd hear that nickname again. A smile grew on his face.
"Well then, Plums."
Peaches and Plums, two old friends with deeper feelings than they knew till they had both grown to hate each other. It only took a pass by, a cat, and an apology, and they were back as one.
