The first day back to school after the Christmas break was always a drag and the Cullen kids were no exception. Carlisle expected to hear some complaining when they got home, ample bellyaching. He didn't expect the way Edward flew through the door and straight up the stairs.
Carlisle glanced to Jasper who was next through the door. "Eddie met his singer today." He explained, "he's not taking it well."
Carlisle zipped up the stairs quite quickly then, too familiar with that feeling. "Edward.." The patriarch said gently, standing in the doorway while his oldest friend flew about his room packing a very small bag.
"I'm going to Alaska." He said sharply, "If I don't I'll kill her. I nearly did as soon as I saw her, rCarlisle. I nearly ripped her throat out as soon as she walked in the room."
"Do what you must." Carlisle's heart ached for the boy. He'd felt the same urge when he first met Minerva but this was totally different. Edward didn't have the experience Carlisle did, nor the time. "How long?"
"Until I can think straight." Edward growled, "It's the chief's daughter. She sat next to me in Biology and I-" his voice broke abruptly as he finally stopped, eyes squeezed shut, "I couldn't read her mind. Not even slightly. It was just silence."
Carlisle blinked a couple times, "I don't.. I don't know how that's possible. Edward, I-"
"I need to go, Carlisle. I'll be a week, I think." Edward muttered, heading for the door which led straight down in the corner of his room. The blonde zipped forward, gripping his son's shoulder tightly.
"I know who you are." Carlisle said gently, "I know you have the strength for this." With that, Edward was gone. Hardly turning his head before he dropped out of the door and flashed away. Carlisle stood, staring out over the expanse of forest ahead of him. Edward would be long gone, even after just the moment but it didn't dull the empathetic ache in his chest. Unlike Carlisle, Edward had succumbed to the lure of Human blood for a time. It's not a taste one quickly forgets and finding a blood which sings for you is impossible for most Vampires to withstand.
Carlisle counted himself lucky that he wasn't like most vampires but he was sure Edward wasn't either. He couldn't think of how different things would be if he wasn't in total control of himself. If he'd lost it and sunk his teeth into Minerva.
For a time, he doubted that she was his singer. Witch blood smelled much different from human's, perhaps that was just it. He knew now that it was more than that. If it was just that she were a witch, he'd be over it by now. Every second with her was a temptation.
Carlisle could imagine just how out of control Edward felt. Running to Alaska was exactly the right call for the situation, he needed to be far from her in his state. Distance was the only solution for some things.
