"Princess can we please take a break the flies are driving us crazy and we haven't eaten all day?" A random soldier asked as we were walking through the woods. We had been walking through the woods for about a week at this point with only taking one break per day to eat. The soldiers looked worn as they hadn't slept since we left the training encampment the morale was low but we had only around three weeks travel left if there was no stoping.
"Anna we need to take a rest these people haven't slept and some haven't even eaten in days if we continue like this people will die," Jeremiah said quietly coming up next to me.
I grunted but decided he was right we would all die if we continued like this, "this is where we rest you have two hours then we start moving again,"
I dropped my heavy bag and sat leaning against a tree listening to the birds. At home we had songbirds that flew through the trees they were such majestic creatures. After mother died if I couldn't sleep I would sneak into the forest and listen to the birds.
"What you thinking about?" Jeremiah asked offering me a cigarette which I pushed away.
"You remember the songbirds back home their songs used to bring me peace," I said looking up at the trees.
"I remember when my dad first joined the royal guard in Caustaryn I was a baby and your mom and dad let me stay in the castle when we would cry or when we were going to sleep she would sing us songs about the birds," Jeremiah said smiling at me. When we were younger Jeremiah's dad joined the guard and Jeremiah and his younger sister Evangeline were allowed to stay in the castle since Jeremiah's mom left after Eve was born.
"Do you ever miss home?" I asked curiously.
"Sometimes yes, sometimes no I mean of course I miss Eve and all them but I don't miss all the pressure of living and working with the royal family," he said pausing remembering all the good and bad times back home, "and of course I miss Maverick with all of my heart," he said getting chocked up.
Jeremiah's older brother Maverick joined the army a year before we joined and around a week after we joined Jeremiah got the news that Maverick was killed in battle.
I smiled sadly at him before standing, "I think you guys have had enough rest so get up get your things let's go," I said turning and grabbing Jeremiah's hand and pulling him to his feet.
