OK SO STILL NOT CHAPTER FOUR THIS IS COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC HOPE YOU ENJOY

Carl Powers (1978-1989)

In "The Great Game", viewers receive the first real insight into Moriarty's past, through the unsolved murder of Carl Powers (or rather, the mis-solved accidental drowning). In fact, it's quite telling about Sherlock's history as well.

Carl Powers, if you recall, is the boy who drowned in a swimming pool- the Atwill-Porter Baths in Bounds Green. Carl was 11 (possibly 12) when he died. He'd come up from the Daniell Street Comprehensive school in Brighton, East Sussex, for a swim competition in London. The police concluded it was accidental, however, the boy's shoes were missing. Over 20 years pass, and Sherlock finds these sneakers, solving the crime that had slipped under the noses of the police for two decades- he was poisoned with the botulinum toxin, put in his medicine two hours before the competition, before he left for London.

Before we can talk about Moriarty, we must first examine information relevant to Sherlock Holmes. (As always)

Sherlock recalls reading about Carl Powers's death in the local paper. This was his first case, and he pointed out the missing shoes, to no avail. Sherlock would have been 12 years old, seeing as his gravestone marks his birth date as January 6th, 1977. (Don't get me started on the inconsistency's because he also says he worked on the Carl powers case at 8 and in the lying detective it shows he was born in 1983 which would make him about 7 🤦‍♂️ Honestly bbc needs to get its shit together but for the sake of this let's say 1977)

The fact that he read this in the newspaper indicates that he must've lived somewhere in the area of Brighton, wherever a local paper would carry the story. I began by examining the paper he was looking at in this scene, which is the Daily Mirror. However, it's a tabloid, and is distributed worldwide, so it's a dead-end.

But, in The Sherlock Files, (don't go after me if this is wrong I did not have access to the actual thing and could only watch a review to see it)  they show a different article in what is probably the newspaper Sherlock had, although no name is given for the paper. In any case, the fact that he learned about the death through the paper means that he probably didn't go to the same school as Carl, otherwise he would have heard about it by ear. That's not hard to believe, since Brighton has over 50 different schools.

Second- In The Empty Hearse we see Sherlock's parents for the first time (something never done in the original series) and discover they came up to London for a few days to visit and sight-see.

More crimes to solve there. But they're only up for a few days, so it's not an extensive trip. Brighton is not that far away from London, only about an hour and a half.

(OK IK IT ALL FALLS APART WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT THE MUSGRAVE HALL SCENES WERE FILMED AT A MANSION IN BIRMINGHAM YOU GOTTA WORK WITH ME HERE OK)

His parents are wealthy and notable individuals; his mother is an intelligent author, and they travel a lot, as Mycroft commented (they were line dancing in Oklahoma), lending credibility to their upper class positions.

Sherlock speaks with proper English, unlike Moriarty; Jim refers to pounds as 'quid,' a slang term used by those not on the higher end of the chain. Lots of little pieces of evidence such as these point towards Jim coming from a middle/lower-middle class family, public school, etc.

There is another point I will touch on later, but right now, for these purposes, I am going to say that Sherlock is from the East Sussex, possibly Brighton, area.
