Shane's past makes my chest ache and it is not pity I feel for him. His past has defined who he is and one thing I admire about him is that he didn't let it affect him in the worst ways making him cruel, instead he is pure. I see Shane as a strong man before and now even moreso.

A slight bit of anger goes through me on how his parents have done.

"Where is your mind at, little paws?" His voice is soft.

"Honestly, how strong I thought you were and now I see you're stronger than any man I know to go through all of that and still be how you are. Also how it makes me feel anger towards your parents for how they done because there is no right for them to say that to you. A good man knows when he needs some help and if Tanker helps you then there is nothing wrong with that at all."

"There you go again knowing just the words to say."

I can barely make out the peaceful look that passes over his face.

"I speak from the heart." I can't help but let some of my sass show.

Shane laughs a little. "Tanker helps me but so are you."

I can feel a sudden warmth and fuzzy feeling spread through my body.

"How have I helped?" I ask out of curiosity.

"Never once have I felt forced to tell you anything. I know the other night you felt my scars but never questioned them, nor have you ever questioned why I had a service dog. I felt things for you the night at the clinic when we met and things you said. Everything always seems so wise for your age but not like you're just saying it to be nice. When you speak things I can feel the truth behind your words."

I go to reply but my words are cut off when Shane lets go of my hand that he has been holding for awhile. I can tell the atmosphere in the truck went from relaxed and talking, getting to know each other more, to serious.

"What is wrong?" I ask when I feel the truck slow with Shane changing between gears, as he pulls us off to the side of the interstate.

At least this section seems to have a wide shoulder area.

"One of the gauges started running to hot." Shane sighs.

"That isn't good is it?" I ask and feel stupid.

"Not really it could mean a number of things really. I can hear the fan working so I don't think it is that so I have to raise the hood."

"Can I help with anything?" I unbuckle the seatbelt.

"Sure. You can hold the flashlight for me. I don't want you climbing on anything though." Shane pops the brakes and turns the truck off, pressing a button above his head to turn on a light inside the truck. He leans over and pulls out a flashlight, putting it in his pocket.

"Sure." I nod.

"Tanker stay." Shane commands, before jumping out and closing the door. I see him run around and I open my door to get out of the truck. I am not jumping like he did because I would probably break my neck, so I grab the bar and use the two steps.
