y/n walks through the crowded halls of her highschool. airpods in ear, scrolling mindlessly on her phone so she doesn't look awkward. she finds her locker and starts to get her books. "MAAAATT" she hears a familiar voice yell. she looks over and notices the triplets all crowded around matt as he gets his items out of his locker.
"nick i'm not buying you oreos from the vending machine, ive already done it four times this week and it's not even thursday" matt rolls his eyes. y/n stares at the boy while he talks to his brothers.
matt felt eyes on him. he looked past nick and noticed y/n staring at him. seeing her brought all the memories back.
FLASHBACK
6 years old: "matt promise me you will be my best friend forever!" y/n giggles sticking her pinkie out. "of course, in this world it's just us!" matt smiles while wrapping his pinkie around hers.
13 years old: "MAAAATT NOO" y/n screams as matt messes up the cupcake frosting the girl was making. it WAS purple frosting but matt went crazy and added too many drops of random colors. "i think brown looks better" matt says while swiping frosting on y/n's nose. "YOU BITCH!"
16 years old: "y/n would you want to like go to the arcade?" matt ask with shaky hands, looking at the floor. "like a date?" y/n ask. "yeah- well no-maybe?" matt stutters while losing his shit. "matt i'd love to" y/n smiles while making eye contact with the boy. "LETTTS GOO BIG BERNARD!!" chris says while running in the room the teens were in.
17 years old: laughs fill up the room. matt and y/n were hand in hand, dancing to lover by taylor swift. "i'm so single" nick says while watching the two teens dance around the boys kitchen. chris sighs and nods in response to nick. "I TAKE THIS MAGNETIC FORCE OF A MAN TO BE MYYYY LOVERRRRRR!!" y/n sings while matt wraps his arms around the girls waist. the two smile and sway to the song.
18 years old: "you're breaking up with me?" y/n ask with her mouth open. this was so unexpected to the girl. "i'm so sorry y/n i'm just too busy with my youtube career i just feel like i'm not being the best boyfriend and that's not what you deserve. you deserve a boyfriend who will give you all of his attention and will constantly be there for you. i wish i could be that boyfriend but i just can't right now. i'm so sorry" matt says while grabbing y/ns hand.
"but we were doing to well" y/n says with teary eyes, looking into matt's eyes. "i know and i'm sorry it had to be so abrupt" matt says. y/n pulls her hands away. she stares at the ground. tears slowly falling down her face.
matt bites the insides of his cheeks not knowing what to do. "but i love you" y/n says looking up at the boy. matt pulls the girl into a hug. "i know y/n i love you too, but this just isn't working" matt says while running his hands through the girls hair.
y/n cries into matt's shirt. holding him for the last time. y/n pulls away and looks at the boy with puffy eyes. "bye y/n" matt says with a frown. y/n doesn't respond. she just watches the boy get into his car and drive off. leaving her with her thought. emotions. tears.
MONTHS LATER though they promised to stay best friends forever, y/n and matt grew apart. she stayed friends with chris and nick for a little but since she didn't hangout with matt too, she ended up distancing herself from the triplets. it made her sad that she lost all 3 of her best friends. but it just wasn't meant to be.
PRESENT! y/n and matt stare at each other. matt smiles a little making y/n smile back at him. seeing him made y/n realize how much she missed them. but she knew the hard truth. it will never be the same as it was.
