The next morning Steve sat in the back of a black sedan next to Agent Carter. He had to admit, he was a little nervous. He kept on drumming is fingers or taping his foot.

The car ride so far had been a little awkward. Neither him nor Agent Carter spoke. He would look at her out of the corner of his eye every now and then and he swore she sometimes glanced at him as well. He still didn't know what her first name was but he was too shy to ask.

He decided to look out the window and realized he knew were they where. "I know this neighborhood. I got beat up in that alley... that parking lot ...and behind that diner." He said, he looked down at his hands.

"Did you have something against running away?" Carter asked him.

"You start running, they'll never let you stop. You stand up, you push back...they can only tell you "no" for so long, right?" He explained.

"I know a little bit of what that's like, to have every door slammed in your face." She spoke, her face still expressionless. Steve had to admit, she was a hard women to read.

He thought for a moment. "I guess I don't know why you would want to join the army if you were a beautiful dame." He cringed as the words left his mouth. She turned a gave him an annoyed look. "A beautiful women... an agent. You are beautiful..." Great job Steve, you really are horrible with women, he thought.

"You have no idea how to talk to a women, do you?" She interrupted him, confirming his thoughts.

"To be honest, this is probably the longest conversation I've ever had with one. Women aren't exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on." He confessed.

"You must have danced."

"Asking a girl to dance seemed so terrifying. The last few years it didn't seem to matter that much. I figure I might as well wait."

"For what?" She questioned.

"For the right partner." He looked out the window and didn't see her reaction to those words.

The car stopped. "This is it." She said and got out of the car.

Steve got out, confused. They where in front of an antique store. Two bums sat in front of it. "Why did we stop here?" He asked her, confused.

"I love a bargain." She spoke and walked into the store. Steve tagged along behind her.

Inside, an old women sat at the front desk. "Lovely weather this morning, isn't it?" She asked Agent Carter.

"Yes, but I always carry an umbrella." Steve realized they must be talking in code.

Peggy lead Steve to a door in the back. A marine guard stood in front of the huge metal door. As it opened, the guard saluted.

Carter lead him down a long, white alway. Around him he could head people muttering and pointing at him.

They reached the end of the hallway and stood on the landing of a set of stairs. Below them was a lab. There were many people there. Scientists, army personal, a film crew and even politicians. They all stopped what they were doing and looked up at Steve.

Carter lead him down a set of steps into the lab. In the center of it was a huge, almost coffin shaped machine with control stations all around it.

Dr. Erskine was there and lead Steve over to the coffin shaped thing. "Here, lay down."

Steve did so. "Comfortable?" The doctor asked.

"You save me any of that schnapps?" Steve asked, smiling.
