𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟰

It has been about a week since Steve's transformation. He had to admit it was odd, it was like he was in someone else's body. Even simple tasks, such as opening a door took some getting use too. He would slam it or open it too hard.

He was managing well thanks to Agent Carter. He had now learned that her name was Peggy. When he had asked her what her first name was, she laughed, surprised he didn't know it.

They had grown close in the past 7 days. He even thought he might have a little crush on her. Never in a million years would never admit it to her though. He figured she probably already had a boyfriend back in England.

Currently he was sitting in Starks lab. Peggy and Howard where there. A nurse was drawing blood from his arm. "Think you've got enough?" He asked, sarcastically.

She filled one last vile and placed it next to dozens of others.

"All of Dr. Erskine's research and equipment is gone. Any hope of reproducing the program is locked in your genetic code. But it would take years. At the moment, you're the only super soldier there is." Peggy explained to him.

Sighing, Steve rolled down his sleeve, "Erskine deserved more than that."

"If it could work only once, he'd be proud it was you." He could see Peggy looking at him from the corner of his eye. An awkward moment of silence followed her comment.

Colonel Phillip and Senator Brandt entered the room, breaking the silence. "Colonel Phillips, my committee is demanding answers." Brandt raises his voice to the Colonel.

"Great. Why don't we start with how a German spy got a ride to my secret installation in your car?" The colonel quipped.

Satisfied that the senator had shut up, he turned to Steve. "What've we got?"

"Well, speaking modestly, I'd say I'm the best mechanical engineer in the country..." Stark turned to one of his large machines that was currently studying the submarine the German spy has tried to escape in. "And I've got no idea what any of this is or how it works. We're nowhere near capable of this technology."

"Then who is it?" The senator questioned.

"Hydra." Phillips stated in a monotone voice.

The senator looked at him, confused. "I'm sure you've read our briefings."

"I'm on a number of committees colonel." Brandt tried to defend himself.

"Hydra is the Nazi deep science division. It's led by Dr. Erskine's first test subject, Johann Schmidt." Peggy explained.

"Hydra's practically a cult. They worship Schmidt, think he's invincible." Phillips continued.

"So what are you going to do about it?" Brandt asked.

"I spoke to the President this morning. As of today the SSR is being re-tasked."

"Colonel?" Peggy looked at him, surprised.

"We're taking the fight to Hydra. Pack your bags, Agent. You, too, Stark. The three of us fly to London tonight."

Steve was surprised that he didn't mention his name. "If your going after Schmidt, I want in."

"You're an experiment. We're sending you to Alamogordo."

"As what, a lab rat? The serum worked!" Steve was mad now.

"I asked for an army. All I got was you. And you are not enough." The colonels tone was stern. Peggy looked at Steve with pity.

Brandt was quick to defend Steve, "With all due respect, Colonel, I think we may be missing the point. You've seen Steve here in action. More importantly, the country's seen it." The senator handed him a news paper, the head line read NATZI SABOTAGE FOILED! MYSTERY MAN SAVES CIVILIANS! He continued, "Enlistment lines have been around the block since this hit the news stands. You don't take a soldier, a symbol, like this and hide him in a lab."
