With the landing gear secure in the aircraft, Peggy and Steve found themselves on the flight deck. It was huge, with high ceiling and windows. On the wings where eight smaller planes with bombs in them.

"He's flying to the States to destroy the eastern sea board," Peggy says in horror, "his plan is already in motion."

Suddenly a bullet zipped past their heads. They turned around to find the eight pilots for the bombs running towards them from the bridge. Steve round house kicked two of them, causing them to fall to the floor in a heap. The other six moved in around them.

Steve took one of them out with his shield while Peggy pulled out her gun. The soldiers quickly tried to tackle her and take the weapon but she was more agile. One lunged at her but she used his own momentum again him and threw him over her shoulder. Using her gun she shot another.

Meanwhile Steve punched another in the face, causing him to stumble back before passing out on the floor. The last one was about to punch Steve in the face when he got shot in the head. Steve turned around to see Peggy standing there, gun raised. "Thanks," he said.

"Anytime," she smirked. The last guard raised his gun to shoot but Peggy was faster and shot him first.

With Peggy's pistol at the ready and Steve's shield in front of them, they cautiously made their way up to the control platform. In the center of it was a large column with a glowing blue cube in it, presumably what powered the plane. To their surprise, no one was there. The pilots chair was empty and everything was quiet.

The whine of a Hydra assault rifle powering up made them whip around. Red Skull was standing there, pointing it at them. Steve raised his shield up just in time as a blast struck them. It ricocheted off his shield and through the cockpit glass. Wind howled outside and cold air filled the room.

"You don't give up, do you?" Red Skull sneered.

"Nope," Steve replied matter of factly.

Schmidt was about to fire it again when Steve leaped at him and wrestled to get it from Red Skulls hands. The gun flew across the room. Forgetting about it, Steve forced on Red Skull. He tried to hit him with the shield but Schmidt grabbed the other end of it.

"You wear a flag on your chest and think you fight a battle of nations? I have seen the future, Captain. There are no flags but Hydra's." Red Skull glared at him.

"Keep the future. I'm looking for a little here and now." With Red Skull distracted, Steve hit him in the jaw with his shield. He staggered back and Steve came at him again, hitting him again with an upper cut.

Schmidt fell into the a control panel making the plane lurch violently. Peggy, who had been aiming her pistol at Schmidt, waiting for a clear shot, ran towards the control panel and leveled out the plane. This movement made Steve and Schmidt fall backwards onto the floor. Steve's shield flew from his grasp and he lay there for a minute, dazed.

With Peggy flying the plane and Steve sprawled out on the floor, Schmidt used this opportunity to draw his pistol, "you could have the power of the gods!" He pointed it at Steve, "and you will not admit you want it?"

"I want what every soldier on the battlefield ever wants..." he glanced at where his shield had fallen by his feet, "for this war to end."

He used his foot to step on the shield, making it fly up into the air, blocking the bullet that came from Red Skull's pistol. Grabbing his shield in mid air, he hurled it at Schmidt who flew backwards into the column with the blue cube.

Blue energy bolts crackled everywhere and the cube began to float. Steve stared in horror, he had no idea what is was or if it was safe. But Red Skull seemed to be entranced by it. Schmidt slowly lifted his hand and touched the glowing cube, it burned off his glove, exposing the red flesh beneath.

Schmidt muttered something under his breath, Steve couldn't quite make it out. Suddenly Schmidt yelled, "no!" As more energy shot from the cube, "no!" He screamed again, acting like a mad man.

To Steve's horror the cube began to open what appeared to be a portal, he saw what looked like space, with stars and planets. Energy bolts shot everywhere and one hit Red Skull, vaporizing him. Steve stood there catching his breath, looking at the spot where Schmidt had just been standing.

For a moment everything was still, but then the cube shot a huge beam up light through the ceiling, blowing open a hole, more cold air filled the room. Then the beam dissipated, just leaving the cube.

"Peggy what's our course?" Steve suddenly remembered they where in a plane, and that huge blast must have hit something vital to the engineering.

"We are headed for Manhattan, if we don't land it soon, a lot of people will be dead," she said with panic.

Steve rushed over to the controls, "we will have to land her in the water, let me fly." Peggy nodded, handing over the controls. She knew what had to be done. This was the end, they where going to die. But at least they would die together as heroes.

From behind her the cube started to melt through the metal of the floor, "is that suppose to be happening Steve?" She pointed to it in worry.

Steve turned and looked, "oh no, we have to land her right now." He didn't know what that mysterious cube was going to do. It could transport them to another planet for all he knew. He tipped the plane into a dive towards the ice below.

As he did so the cube melted through the floor and dropped out of the plane leaving a massive hole. At the sudden jerk of the plane, Peggy lost her balance and stumbled backwards. She tried to grab onto something but it was too late, she fell through the hole and into the ice bellow.

"Steve!" She called as she fell. And then there was silence, just the rushing of the wind.

"Peggy?" Steve turned around and looked at the hole she has disappeared through. Unbearable sadness filled him, but at least he was about to die as well. They would go down in history as heroes. They sacrificed themselves for millions of people.

That was the last thought going through Steve's head as he crashed into the ice.

And then, there was just blackness.
