Dear Emily,

You've been my muse for a long time. I have loved you since I was young and you have been by my side ever since.  Do you remember back then, when we were young?. We were careless and carefree, away from all the drama back at my parents and your suffocating ones. We were finally out in the world. Together. I miss those times. I miss having you close. Your thought is the only thing getting me through these cold nights in here. Come visit soon.
David.

David got home late for the first time, a couple of months after they moved in together. She had just turned 18, it was only reasonable to leave home then, David was 19, after all. They had been friends since middle school and they fell in love in high school. They confessed their feelings to one another after drunk-kissing at a party. David always had feelings for her, but Emily was oblivious to them. That was reasonable, too, he could hide his feelings so well.

They were happy. Both legal adults, leaving the toxic environment they called home. It was a classic high school sweethearts story. But things took a turn the night David got home late. Emily had stayed up late waiting for him, he didn't stay out till 6 in the morning, not without telling her, at least.

As he got in the house, trying to be as quiet as possible so his beautiful girlfriend wouldn't wake up, he saw her on the couch, waiting for him. Her long blonde bleached hair, whose roots were dark brown as she hadn't touched up the color in a while, was pulled in a bun on top of her head, messily falling on her face. Her white cardigan draped all over her, her yoga pants showing off her curves perfectly, and her beautiful brown eyes, filled with worry. She was biting her nails, something she did when she was nervous or afraid. David was sure it was a mixture of both right now, so he tried to comfort her.

"Hey baby" David said, his voice soft. He loved the girl in front of him with everything he had. He took her hands in his so she wouldn't bite her nails anymore and let them fall in her lap. He then put his around her face, holding her and with his thumbs he caressed her cheeks, drying her tears. "I'm sorry I didn't call you, I forgot. I was at the bar with the guys".

Emily nodded her head vigorously. She was losing her mind, waiting for him, she was worried he wouldn't come back, that she would be left alone. She knew David would never leave her, he stayed with his parents for another year to be close to her, after all. He loved her and she loved him.

"Please don't...do this to me again" Her sobs were cutting off her voice. David closed his arms around her, letting her cry on his shoulder as he caressed her hair. He promised to never make her sad like that ever again. He stood up still holding her in his embrace. Emily locked her legs around his waist as he walked towards their bedroom. He let the tear stained girl down on the bed and laid down next to her. Emily immediately snuggled in his arms. Her sobs stopped as he whispered sweet nothings to her, their only purpose to calm her down nad show her how much he truly loves her.

They'd been together for two years. Two years is a long time in the world we live in now, but they had achieved those years while they were still in their teens. At 16, when David got her a bouquet, asked to take her to prom. Or when he waited for an hour in the rain, outside of her house, for her to go back home, so she woudn't go to sleep angry at him. She remembered all those sweet times they had together. It didn't matter if her parents weren't very supportive of their relationship, they still made it work.

David was staring at the ceiling as he caressed her long hair. He wouldn't be able to lie to her for long. His new job would keep him away most nights. She would need a ride after her shifts at the cafe in the evenings, but she could take the bus, she was a big girl. He didn't like to think that she would be alone, but he had to provide for them. He was job-hunting since they first moved in together. He had done some jobs but nothing that could give her the life she deserved and he wanted to give her that and so much more. Which is what led him to his new job and that was no ordinary nine to five.

He'd have to sleep all day, so he would be well rested in the evening. He got a job as a bouncer at a club. It was a fifteen minute walk from their apartment. The money wasn't much, but it was definitely more than what he'd make as a worker, especially at a factory. The hours were better too. As a factory worker he'd be gone all day and wouldn't see her till night time and that just wouldn't do.

Neither of them had anything more than a high school diploma. Emily was working towards a full scholarship in an undergraduate program in Julliard. She had been playing the piano for her whole life, she was good at it, too. David knew she could make it. But she may have to stop working or take fewer shifts once she is in. They'd sent the application a couple of weeks earlier and David was doing everything in his power to calm her nerves, so you can see why what he pulled today upset her so much. He was her anchor, but she was his entire world. Which meant he would gladly make sacrifices if they would surely help her achieve her goals. Therefore, his new job.

The club where he was working was downtown. Downtown New York. He liked the sound of that. He hoped that one day he'd be able to take her there, buy her a huge apartment, and give her the world. And he would do it, one step at a time, first step being to tell her. And he would do it. In the morning. As far as he could tell by the sound of her little snores, she was already asleep. He kissed her head and closed his eyes, letting sleep overtake him, too.
