"Emily, I just can't seem to wrap my head around the idea of you not seeing anyone special. You're one of the prettiest women I know! Any man would love you."
It all started here. With her cousin, Anna, asking her about her love life under the striped overhang of a small cafe on her day off. It wasn't typically how she would spend her day, but she was told that her cousin had an announcement to make, and she had to be there.
"I have a friend named Chris who is recently divorced. . . He's a lawyer, and a good looking one, at that. Just your type." Anna's mother, and Emily's aunt stated, sipping on her tea evenly. Ila bore resemblance to her own mother, although they were not blood related.
Ila was her aunt through marriage, although the resemblance was overwhelming sometimes. Both being pesky, nagging women that enjoyed seeing other people squirm under their jurisdiction. Sort of like a fly, Emily mused.
"Yeah, I'll pass."
"Why? Are you seeing somebody you haven't told us about?" Ila urged, provoking the sound of buzzing in Emily's mind.
She was so fed up with hearing about her cousin's perfect life with her perfect fiancé in her perfect home on the river. Emily could feel her blood boil beneath her skin as the urge to one-up her became unbearably strong.
"Yeah. I am seeing someone," she blurted out.
Both women were taken aback by this statement.
"Really? What does he do?" Her aunt asked.
It didn't surprise Emily that this was the first question to escape her mouth. Nothing like 'does he make you happy' or 'how long have you been together'.
"He's in law enforcement," she blurted again, unable to think before the words left her blabbering mouth.
"My, my. . . How long have you two been together? I think I would have heard about this from Elizabeth."
"Actually, I haven't told her about him yet. We've only been together a few weeks. In fact, I haven't told many people at all."
Lies were coming out of her mouth faster than she could stop them. The best part about this was the way they believed her. Their jaws practically dropped at the mention of her dating, and she couldn't help but enjoy the feeling of satisfaction.
"Emily, I'm so happy for you!" her brunette cousin exclaimed, squeezing her hand from across the table. "Speaking of relationships. . . Mother, I really do wish aunt Elizabeth were here to hear this, but I would like to announce the date of my wedding."
"Oh, dear," her mother gasped, as though she was hearing greater news than the fact that she was getting engaged.
Emily held back a scoff. It was just a date. Just another formal get together she had to attend, all to remind her that Anna's life was going somewhere, and hers was not.
"Three months to the day," the brunette announced with a blush on her light cheeks. She bore much resemblance to Emily, with her dark hair and naturally light, porcelain complexion. "I want you both to be there. Especially you, Emily," she told her, sipping on her vanilla mocha while a gentle smile played at her lips. "You can bring your boyfriend. I would love to meet him."
"Oh, uh, he's, uh very busy. A lot. Don't you fly back to Oregon in September? How will you have the wedding here?"
"That's the other thing. . . the wedding is going to be held in Oregon! I'm flying everyone out personally. Private jet."
Of course. Of course you have a private jet. Her cousin worked in politics, but certainly didn't have the income to afford a jet. Emily suspected this money undoubtedly came from her mother's side of the family; Wealthy politicians in Salem, who's parents before them were equally as wealthy.
"Wow, that's great!" she forced a huge, plastic smile across her face, which wasn't detected by either women. Both were too infatuated with the fact that their perfect little lives would now be complete with Anna's new family that was starting.
"So you'll come?!"
Uh, when did I agree to this? Emily thought. She would have to find a date before the wedding. How hard could that be? After all, she's 'the prettiest woman Anna knows'. How hard could it be to find a date in three months?
"Of course I'll be there. We'll be there."
"Great! Oh, and Emily, between you and I, I would love to meet this mystery man before the wedding. He sounds so handsome. I've never been with anyone in law enforcement before."
Of course you haven't. You've never been with anyone other than rich, snobby politicians who either want to use you as a trophy wife, or marry you out of convenience. Emily decided not to share her thoughts.
"Give me a call!" she said instead, standing up beside the two woman.

Now, back at her apartment that night, Emily stared up at the flower shaped ceiling light, eyes open and heart beating quickly.
She had three months to find a date. Preferably in law enforcement, just so she wouldn't have to lie anymore. It wasn't a small range of people, luckily. Thankfully, Ila nor Anna had asked what type of law enforcement he worked in. That sure would have narrowed the spectrum.
As she laid there, she thought of potential candidates for this position. She knew most of the officers down at the local police station, and she simply couldn't go for anyone in the BAU because it would be too awkward when she had to break it off eventually.
It was only then when she realized what a bind she had placed herself into.
It needed to be a friend, she decided. Someone who understood why she was doing this and understood how to help her.
Unfortunately, for her, the only male friends she had in Quantico at the moment were her coworkers.
Spencer Reid, Derek Morgan, David Rossi, and her unit chief and boss, Aaron Hotchner.
