"Wakey Wakey, eggs and bakey" I was in a warm cocoon dreaming of my knight in shining armor, who was running towards me in a forest on a magnificent white steed. A voice, which seems to be all around me, calls something out and my world is being shaken, with all the trees shaking and pieces of bark and leaves fall down. I wake up and sit up straight with a gasp and moan, damn that sugar hang over, I fall back down, face first into my bedding "Too early!" I mumble into my pillow while I shimmy to find that comfortable spot again, suddenly the blanket is thrown off me "Nooo not that, anything but that" when the warmth isn't returned, I sit up with my eyes closed and I pout. I hear a giggle "You are so dramatic! Get your ass out of bed and get dressed, we have an appointment in an hour with my gynecologist, I mean unless you have one in mind. But I doubt it, then after the doctor's appointment we are going for breakfast" that has me popping my eyes open and smiling "Nope no gynecologist, that I know about, I think. This is way too early for these type of questions" I stretch spreading my arms wide and arching my back, then her words register, and I snap my eyes open "What? Why?" she comes to sit next to me on the bed "Honey, last night was our pity party remember and as per the roommate rules established by the five-year-old us, we have to pull up our big girl panties after a night of self-allowance of feel-sorry-for-me's. So, we need to put plans into order, and we can only do that after we have confirmation and to do that, we need blood tests to be done" I jump at her, wrap my arms around her and squeeze "I love you, you know that right?" I give her another squeeze and release her, I get up from my pink duvet covers and gather my clothes that have been laid out for me, by my new mother, apparently "I love you too, you do realize I'm appointing myself as his or her God-mother right now, right?" I laugh and head towards the bathroom, I shout over my shoulder on my way out "I would be disappointed if you didn't"
We are sitting in the doctor's waiting rooms that has white eggshell walls and tiled floors and rows of chairs that are full of pregnant women, waiting for my name to be called. The inside of my elbow still stinging from the needle, where they took a blood sample to confirm my pregnancy, the room is full of woman in different stages of pregnancy. I'm having a fun time of this game I just made up, placing the woman's bumps into a small to large organization when I feel Olivia nudge me the same time the receptionist calls. "Miss Mackenzie, the doctor will see you now" Olivia and I get up and walk down the hall into a room, that looks like an office with a desk and chairs and lots of intimate pictures of lady parts and certificates lining the walls, we sit at the desk just as a woman walks in with a white lab coat on and a her bun in her hair with glasses on.
She holds out her hand and I shake it wondering if she can feel my sweaty palms "Miss Mackenzie, I'm doctor Leyton. Pleased to meet you, please have a seat" I sit down and motion next to me "Thanks doctor Leyton, this is my best friend Olivia" Olivia shakes the doctor's hand and we all take our seats. "OK let's get down to it" I take a deep breath and motion for her to carry on "Congratulations, you are expecting a baby, according to the results of your blood test, you are 4 weeks and 4 days pregnant. That would make your due date March 14th, It's a little early to do any sonograms and anything like that" Olivia grabs my hands and squeezes, making me look at her and she offers a smile, I smile back "You have options of course" the doctor carries on "abortion or adoption" I shake my head, making her pause "I grew up in a Catholic household, so option one isn't an option at all and I can't grow a baby then give it up so no to option two" I smile at her, she nods then she carries on "that's great to hear, I'm not supposed to have an opinion but I love hearing that I don't have to do something I personally don't agree with. I'm writing up a prescription for folic acid and vitamins and I need you to make an appointment for next month so we can check the baby's heartbeat" she finishes writing and tears the paper and hands it to me. "Do you have any questions?" I shake my head "Not at the moment but as we're coming back in a month's time, could I think of some then ask them then?" She nods and smiles "Sure, no problem" We stand up "Thank you so much, Doctor Leyton. We appreciate you taking us on, and we can't wait to see the baby's heartbeat. Goodbye" she stands with us and waves as we walk out of the door. We go to the receptionist station and make our next appointment and receive the pamphlets, Olivia squeezes my hand while we wait and when it's time to leave, she puts her arm around me, and we exit the clinic and head to the car. Once we are both seated inside, we turn to each other and say "Sunset Cafe" at the same moment and Olivia starts the car and pulls into traffic.
