Rapunzel paced back and forth as she waited not-so-patiently for her husband to return, the click click of her shoes echoing through the large foyer of the castle.
Jonathan had been called to a meeting in the kingdom of Prince Charming and Snow White. He wouldn't tell her what it was about, only that it was urgent and he'd be gone for about a week. But he was supposed to return today.
After what seemed like forever, the large doors swung open and Prince Jonathan walked in. Rapunzel let out an excited shriek and ran to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her on the cheek. Then she knew. Whatever the meeting was about had upset him. He always kissed her on the mouth when he would return from long journeys. Something was wrong.
"What is it?" she asked. "What's wrong?"
He shook his head, not sure how he would tell her.
"Please tell me what's troubling you." she pleaded.
Jonathan took a deep breath. "You know Regina, the former queen?"
"Yes, the Evil Queen. What about her?"
"She's planning something terrible!"
"What?"
"She's going to take away all the happy endings by tearing away the things we love the most."
"How?" she asked nervously.
"With the Curse."
Rapunzel's eyes widened.
"You mean . . . The Curse? The Dark Curse?"
The Prince nodded.
"How did she get it?"
"Nobody knows."
Suddenly, Rapunzel's thoughts went to her lost children. Right after they got married, they began searching for the babies. But after eleven years, they still hadn't been found.
"We have to find them!" she blurted out.
"I sent out another search this morning." he replied. "But we've been looking for eleven years. The chances of them being found now are-"
"Don't say it!" she interrupted. "Please."
She knew they would probably never be found. She had thought about confronting Rumpelstiltskin about what he had done with them, but the idea of seeing him after she had escaped his tower made her uneasy.
Then another thought came to
her. . .
She's going to take away all the happy endings by tearing away the things we love the most.
"And now I'm going to lose you, too!" she exclaimed. She put her head on her husband's chest and cried. He reached up and stroked her hair, which had grown out and now reached the middle of her back. Then he leaned down and kissed the top of her head. "You'll never lose me." he said.
"Don't make promises you can't keep." she sniffed.
He knew she was right. He wrapped his arms around her, and they just stood there for a while, holding each other.

A few days later, Rapunzel and Jonathan were walking past a large window in one of the castle halls. Rapunzel looked out the window and saw a giant purple cloud rolling over the trees, headed toward the castle.
"Jonathan." she said, staring at the cloud. He turned and saw it, too. And somehow they both knew what it was. They threw their arms around each other.
"I love you!" Rapunzel said into the Prince's neck.
"I love you, too!" he replied. Then he bent down and kissed her. They were still kissing when the windows shattered, allowing the purple cloud to enter inside. In a matter of seconds, it had completely engulfed them, changing their lives forever.
