BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Rowena groaned and reached for her phone to shut off the alarm. After it was quiet, she clumsily tossed it back onto her bedside table. She wasn't ready to get up yet! But she had to, or she'd be late for work. With a sigh, she threw her covers off from around her and got out of bed. She went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Her
shoulder-length blonde hair, which she had recently added purple stripes to, was a tangled mess, and her makeup was smeared underneath her eyes from not washing it off the night before.
'Whoa!' she thought to herself as she ran a hand through her hair. 'We have a lot of work to do!'
She took a quick shower and washed her face. As she brushed her teeth, she walked back into her room and grabbed her phone. The clock on it read 9:37. She was going to be late if she didn't hurry! After rinsing her toothbrush, Rowena quickly put on some eyeliner and mascara, not having time to do her whole face.
Then she slipped on a pair of comfortable shoes, grabbed her purse, and headed out the door.
She popped into Granny's Diner to grab a coffee, then continued on to work.
The place she worked was the town salon, 'Lots of Locks' where she cut hair. She was the most popular hairdresser there.
As she hurried down the sidewalk, she noticed a car she had never seen before parked on the opposite side of the street. It was a little yellow VW Bug. 'That's strange. We never get visitors here.' she thought.
She quickly finished her coffee, even though it was a tad too hot, and tossed it in the trash next to the front door of her workplace. When she got there, it was 9:51. Nine minutes to opening time. Rowena breathed a sigh of relief. She wasn't late after all!
Going into the back room, she set her purse down and grabbed her hairdresser's apron that had her name embroidered near the top and slightly to the left.
As she put it on, she heard someone else come in. Turning around, she saw her best friend, Amber.
"Hey!" Amber said.
"Hey!" Rowena replied.
"So," Amber began with a smirk. "How'd it go?"
"How'd what go?"
"Your date! You know, the one you'd been talking about for days beforehand?"
"Oooohhhhhhh, thaaaat!"
"Yeeeeesssssss, thaaaat! So...how was it?"
"Oh, you know..."
"Actually, I don't know. That's why I asked." Amber laughed.
"It...went well. He's really nice, and I like him a lot."
"There's a but coming, isn't there?" Amber sighed. "Let's hear it."
"But...what if he's not actually like that? What if he was...I don't know, just putting on a front for the first date?"
"Ro, you've got to stop over-thinking things!"
"I know, I know!"
The clock on the wall chimed, meaning that it was officially time for work to start.
"We'll talk more about this later." Amber said.
"Yes, mother." Rowena said sarcastically, dramatically rolling her eyes.
Amber jokingly shot her a warning glare as she walked out of the back room.
Rowena chuckled and followed her friend out into the salon, ready for another day at work.
