Rubert walked into the room complaining about one of her classmates and how she wanted to kill them, and the group of friends took it all in stride because it was a fairly normal occurrence. They did, however, do a comical doubletake because they were pretty sure she had a broken leg, like, yesterday.
"Your leg's not broken!" Moses cheered, throwing his hands up in the air.
They were all in his and Angel's dorm room, and the men decided to sit on the floor while Gavie and Mia took the dark-skinned man's bed and Dara took Angel's. Janine was sprawled on the floor scribbling in her notebook as she muttered song lyrics to herself.
"Yeah! My doctor used his magic!" Rubert chirped happily, wiggling the previously broken leg before she flopped down onto the ground next to Moses. "What're you guys working on?"
"I'm reading over a script." Moses said as he showed her the cover. Their project that semester was to put on a short play of their choice with music and props. His group- him, two guys, and a girl- chose Alice in Wonderland. He was playing the Mad Hatter and it was a bit nerve wracking. "They're working on some songs together." He gestured to Janine and Angel who were huddled together a few feet away.
"What if you changed this word to overpass?" Angel wondered as he tapped Janine's notebook once. "Is it fast or slow?"
"Fast." She said as she tapped her pencil on the side of her head as she kicked her feet gently back and forth behind her. "I thought about making it slow but it doesn't flow that well." She hummed a bit of what was in her head, trying not to feel insecure about it.
Angel repeated the melody like a song bird and he nodded once when he finished. "I like it. Is this the first song?"
"No, I finished one other." She flipped through the journal before stopping on one titled Don't Let the Light Go Out. "It's a little rushed but-"
"No, I like it. Hum a little?"
Janine complied and watched as the man closed his eyes to listen. She wondered how it sounded to his enhanced hearing. She knew about it because he didn't bother trying to hide the fact that his senses were heightened. How did he control it so well? What was his anchor? "What do you think?"
"It's perfect. Do we have anyone to play the instruments?"
"Mhm!" She grinned. "My brothers are in a band and agreed to play for us! I just have to buy them dinner for a week."
Angel nodded, reading the words again. "I'll help pay. So that's two out of five songs done. Do you have any ideas for the other three?"
"Well, Ms. Kiyomi is offering to knock off two of the five required songs if we make our third song sound like a story. It's- How'd she describe it... She said she'd give us some papers with some people's life story, or a story about themselves that they're willing to share, and we have to put it in a song. The story has to be in the singer's point of view, though."
"Do you have the packet?"
The group of friends watched as the two continued to collaborate on the project, Angel obediently humming a melody Janine tried to describe to him while she changed around and added lyrics he suggested. The two worked in tandem, never once interrupting the other, and the rest of the group wondered how the two managed to work so well together despite barely speaking for more than an hour during their first meeting.
"He's fitting in well." Rubert commented as she leaned slightly on Moses when she stretched out on the floor. "How's he as a roommate?"
Moses grinned brightly at the question, his eyes practically sparkling with glee. "He makes breakfast sometimes, and he helps me study. He's really freaking smart. I actually think he should be third year, or already graduated."
