....

Snape went first to the hospital wing to fetch Madeline and Madam Pomfrey. They were sitting together as if waiting to be summoned, and when Madeline saw Snape she flew into his arms.

He held her tightly for a brief moment, then quickly gave them a cursory explanation of what had come to pass and told them that Moody would need medical attention immediately.  The two women ran to Moody's office and Snape went to find Cornelius Fudge.

...

Madeline and Madame Pomfrey had brought the real Alastor Moody to the hospital wing and had treated him with a variety of potions and spells. He was lying motionless in the hospital bed, his wooden leg and magical eye lying on the bedside table next to him.

They had been told that Harry Potter would be spending the night there as well, and Mrs. Weasley, Ron Weasley, Bill Weasley, and Hermione Granger were all anxiously waiting there to see him.

Dumbledore escorted Harry there himself. They were accompanied by a large black dog that Dumbledore insisted was well-trained and would stay with Harry. Madam Pomfrey didn't argue, but helped Harry into bed and gave him a sleeping draft to help him rest.

Madeline and Madame Pomfrey had just gotten everyone settled when they heard loud voices and heavy footsteps.

"What on earth..." Madeline muttered.

"They'll wake him if they don't shut up!" Madame Pomfrey whispered harshly.

"What are they shouting about? Nothing else can have happened, can it?" Madeline was incredulous.

Mrs. Weasley and Bill were suddenly on their feet.

"That's Fudge's voice," Mrs. Weasley whispered. "And that's Minerva McGonagall's, isn't it? But what are they arguing about?"

Madeline could hear them too: people shouting and running toward the hospital wing.

"Regrettable, but all the same, Minerva -" Cornelius Fudge was saying loudly.

"You should never have brought it inside the castle!" yelled Professor McGonagall. "When Dumbledore finds out..."

The hospital doors burst open and Fudge came striding up the ward.  McGonagall and Snape were at his heels.

"Where's Dumbledore?"  Fudge demanded of Mrs.Weasley.

"He's not here," said Mrs. Weasley angrily.

"This is a hospital wing. Minister, don't you think you'd do better to -" Madame Pomfrey started.

But the door opened, and Dumbledore came sweeping in.

"What has happened?"  said Dumbledore sharply, looking from Fudge to Professor McGonagall. "Why are you disturbing these people? Minerva, I'm surprised at you - I asked you to stand guard over Barty Crouch -"

"There is no need to stand guard over him anymore, Dumbledore!"  she shrieked. "The Minister has seen to that!"

Madeline had never seen Professor McGonagall lose control like this.  There were angry blotches of color in her cheeks, and her hands were balled into fists; she was trembling with fury.

"When we told Mr. Fudge that we had caught the Death Eater responsible for tonight's events," said Snape, in a low voice, "he seemed to feel his personal safety was in question. He insisted on summoning a dementor to accompany him into the castle. He brought it up to the office where Barty Crouch -"
