It was two o'clock in the morning.
Madeline's eyes opened and it took her a moment to recognize the unfamiliar surroundings. She and Snape had, indeed, stayed with the Malfoys at the manor so she could continue to care for Lucius.
They were in the beautiful, opulent master bedroom; Narcissa was sleeping next to her husband in the luxurious bed, nestled snugly into his side.
Draco, home from school for the weekend, was sleeping quite soundly under a pile of blankets on the floor by the warm fireplace. The boy had not wanted to let his father out of his sight after hearing of the events that had transpired that evening.
Madeline and Severus were surprisingly comfortable under a thick quilt on the large couch across the room (Madeline needed to be close to Lucius to monitor him through the night and Snape refused to sleep in one of the elegant guest rooms without her). Draco had lent her one of his quidditch jerseys so she didn't have to sleep in her clothes. Snape had removed his cloak, cravat, and greatcoat and unbuttoned his shirt so that she could lay her head on his bare chest. His left arm held her close to his body and his right dangled off the sofa as he slept. She lay for a moment listening to her love's heart beating, then got up to check on her patient. Severus stirred as she gingerly crawled off him, but did not wake.
Madeline waved her wand over Lucius Malfoy's sleeping form, casting her diagnostic spells. He was stable, but he needed more blood replenisher.
She went to her bag and withdrew two vials containing potions, then returned to his bedside. She gently laid her hand on his shoulder.
"Lucius," she whispered.
His ice blue eyes opened. He cleared his throat. "What is it, Kitten?"
"I hate to wake you, but it's time for more blood replenisher." She held out one of the potions.
He sat up, groaning softly, and emptied the vial.
Narcissa raised up in the bed next to him and gently rubbed his back.
"Is he alright, Maddie?" she asked.
Madeline nodded. "He's fine. It's just that his blood levels are still a bit low."
"Thank you," Lucius said, handing her the empty vial.
"Would you like something for pain?"
"Gods, yes."
"I thought you might," she said, handing him the other vial.
"You're an angel," he said hoarsely, and swallowed the pain reducing potion.
"How is your breathing? Are you struggling at all? Are you short of breath?"
"No."
"Good." She helped Lucius lie back against the pillows.
"Let me check your wound."
He opened his pajama top and she lit her wand in order to examine his chest. The wound was still closed and the scar had almost completely disappeared.
"It looks great, Lucius. You can go back to sleep. I'm sorry I had to disturb you."
He took her hand and kissed it. "You're too good to me."
"Maddie?" Narcissa whispered.
"Mmm?"
"Thank you. I can't thank you enough."
"It's nothing," she smiled. "Now both of you get some rest."
Madeline went back to the couch. Snape had woken, and he lifted up the quilt for her as she climbed back of top him. They wrapped their arms around each other, and he kissed her on the top of her head.
