The new set of keys jingled in Kakashi's hand as he made his way to the front door. He scanned his eyes around the entirety of the outside of the house, taking in the overgrown grass and bushes on the side that Pakkun was currently exploring, the rotting wood that made up the porch, and the windows that desperately needed to be taken out and replaced. He dreaded walking through the front door, picturing the inside to need even more work than the outside.
He hadn't realized how much damage had been done to the home in the years that it had been vacant, the realtor had so kindly downplayed that information. He looked back at the truck that held every single one of his belongings, wondering if it was too late to move back to his old home. Deciding that he was a man who did indeed stick to his word, no matter the trouble it was about to get him in, he inserted the keys into the door handle, though it wasn't needed at all. Before he could even turn the key, the door swung open, the doorknob and key flying from his grasp. He looked at the frame of the door and saw that it hadn't closed properly in a very long time. Kakashi gave a heavy sigh, a look of 'why did I decide to do this' sat on his face.
That was a question he had been asking himself the entire drive over because he really had no solid idea as to why he decided to leave his nice and already put-together home for this. Maybe it was the boredom. After the war, he had been sent on mandatory leave for however long he wanted, something he had never been given before. He had always been needed, his skills as a ninja invaluable, but now there was peace, and he was given time to heal. Or as Gai had told him, time to get a life.
So instead of having nothing to do at his own home besides taking Pakkun on walks, he had decided to buy this old hunk of junk and fix it up. It was something to take his mind off of everything else. But he still didn't know why this was what had caught his attention. And now he was regretting the responsibility of actually having to do the work when he could have just enjoyed his indefinite vacation.
But it was too late now.
He took a step inside, taking a good look around at all the rooms. It wasn't as terrible as he had thought on the inside, the front room being the main thing he would need to focus on at first, as it had taken the brunt of nature since the front door never properly latched shut. He took notes of what he would want to change; take out this wall, replace that frame, and those stairs would need to be redone. Noting that there was nothing of detrimental damage done downstairs, he decided to risk his life and walk up to the first floor to see what was going on up there.
The stairs thankfully weren't about to fall apart, they only looked like they were. Thanks to this fact, Kakashi was able to safely make it to the next floor. Up here was almost perfectly intact, much to Kakashi's surprise. The only things that he wanted to change were the wallpaper, which looked like a grandmother had picked it out, and the nasty carpet. He would be able to move most of his things up here and get set up. He was ecstatic that he would be able to at least set up his bedroom and get a good night's sleep.
He walked into what was supposed to be the master bedroom and was hit instantly with a chill. He looked around, trying to find the source of the freezing temperature, but found nothing. The air wasn't on, there was no fan, and it was a nice 70 degrees outside. He was boggled but decided that his blankets and Pakkun would keep him warm enough until he found the source. He made his way to the bathroom and found that it was also fairly clean, save for the buildup of dust that caked the entire thing. He looked down at the floor to see a set of footprints in the dust, ones that didn't belong to him and looked fairly new. He wondered if someone had broken in, seeing as the door was busted it would have been extremely easy.
That door would have to be the first thing that he fixed. He didn't feel like having someone walk in whenever they pleased.
He went back down the stairs and out the front door, making his way to the truck to start bringing in his things. He called for his loyal dog to follow him inside, not wanting him on the lawn for too long on his own.
