The holiday's were quickly approaching. Your favorite time of year. Before, you would have been constantly with the Presley's, specifically helping Gladys prepare for Thanksgiving, but everything had changed. She was gone and Elvis was pretty much another world away in Germany. But you couldnt let yourself think like that. You were going steady with Sonny and you were both forming your own lives and traditions. Sonny had invited you to be with him and his family, but you were insistent upomnusing Graceland to host Thanksgiving, not wanting to quite give up your comfort space, therefore making yourself busy in the kitchen by organizing all the pots, pans, and dishes. Sonnybstrolled through holding a newspaper and as he flipped the page a picture caught your eye. "You weren't gonna show me this?" You asked, getting up from your knees and reaching for the newspaper. He shrugged and released it to you. "I didn't think much of it I suppose." He said. You flipped and observed the picture of your best friend with an arm around a beautiful young girl.
She looked young in the face, yet somehow reminded you of Debra Paget and Gladys all at the same time. You felt a sinking in the pit of your stomach. You hadn't fully prepared for Elvis finding someone in Germany. Sure you heard of his flings here and there but for some reason this girl just looked different. Maybe it was the way Elvis held her tightly to his side. Maybe it was her uncanny resemblances she held. Either way, the photo hit you harder than a ton of bricks. "Y/n, you okay darlin?" Sonny asked, making you break your trance from the photo. "If things are progressing too quickly let me know. I'm not here to push you into something you're not ready for." Sonny said and you shook your head immediately, his suggestion catching you off guard. "No no! I asked for this. I wanted this. It's just...it's an adjustment." You say, avoiding the truth, but Sonny seemed to see through your words. "You still love him." Sonny stated. "Sonny, I-" He held up a hand. You finally put the newspaper down and covered your eyes. "I'm sorry." Sonny took your arms and pulled them away from your face. "Don't be sorry. It's not gonna stop me from wantin to be with ya...I just wanna know what you're okay with...and I need you to know I'm here for you no matter how you feel or what you choose to do." He said and held you close. Tou felt safe. Safe to know that you could take your time to get over Elvis and move on and go at your own pace. "I'll always love him...but I told you and I told him, I'm not gonna be the girl on the side. With you, I feel important." You say honestly. "You'll always be important to me, y/n. If we're rushin too much and want Thanksgiving to just be us that's okay too. I understand." He said and you furrowed your eyebrows. "I may be having a moment of weakness but I definitely still would love your family's company. I'm excited to meet everyone." You smile and peck his lips. "Good." He smiled and kissed you once more, slightly deepening the kiss until you were interrupted by the afternoon staff's entrance and continued on with your organization, for the first time feeling a sense of calm and sureness in your plans for the future as you happily prepared for your favorite holidays of the year.

Before you knew it the new year had arrived. You were kept busy working full time with the local Memphis magazine, taking photos for them and their exclusive columns. Sonny, kept you on your toes though too by constantly surprising you with flowers, dates, and making plans for your future. Meanwhile, older brother Red had departed Memphis for Germany to join Elvis at his request, so when you got a long distance call for the first time since Elvis had arrived in Germany it wasn't a surprise to you. You were sure Red was going to be a pesky gossip and tell Elvis about your newfound love interest.
"Y/n." His voice came through on the other end. He sounded the same, but somehow different.
"Hi, Elvis." You say, attempting to sound fairly happy, instead of annoyed at the reason for his call.
"Red told me you're going with his brother?" Elvis asked, as if to try to confirm for himself.
"Yup. For about a year now." You say.
"You know Sonny works for me, dontya? I can have him fired in a second." Elvis threatened and you rolled your eyes.
"What does you Debra Paget look-alike think about your jealousy issues?" You shoot back, not wanting to take any of his shit.
"You just coulda told me first instead I'm hearing it from his fuckin brother." Elvis said, clearly pissed off.
"Elvis Presley, would you calm down. You don't tell me everything I'm sure of that." You let out a small sarcastic laugh.
"Unless we wanna start sharing everything, I'd be happy to tell you about my sex life." You smile slyly.
"Fuck you. This is why I don't call home." Elvis says and he hangs up on you. You feel proud of yourself, get feel an unexpected lump in your throat. After a year of not hearing from him this wasn't the conversation you were wanting. The phone suddenly rang and again the operator informed you of the long distance call. You accept and his voice comes through.
"I'm sorry wittle." He says, clearly regretful of his words.
"I am too E." You say and take a deep breath.
"I miss you. Tell everyone I say hi and tell Sonny...I'm happy for yall." He says. You can tell that was probably very difficult of him to say but appreciate the sentiment.
"Thank you. I hope you're happy too Elvis." You say.
"I love you wittle darlin." He says and you smile to yourself.
"I love you too E. Don't be a stranger." You say and bid goodbye. At now if only the conversation had been like that the whole time but you finally felt at ease.
Sonny then walka through the door carrying a single rose. "Hello beautiful." He smiles and kisses you. "Let's go out...what's that look for?" He asks studying the big smile on your face. "Elvis called and.." Sonny's face fell slightly. "And he said he's happy for us...going steady for a year together and all." You smile and kiss him. He smiles and wraps his arms around you. "Well ain't that refreshing." He said. You both basically had Elvis's blessing on being together. It felt good to know your best friend could finally be happy and civil with you about who you chose to go with. Now, if only you could come around and feel the same way about the little girl he was seeing there.
