Later that night, we are all sitting, waiting for the fireworks to start. I was beside Kirstin, who had her arm around me. My brown eyes moved to Scott, who had admiration in his blue eyes. It seemed as though Scott had feelings for Kirstin. Did Scott actually have feelings for Kirstie? I wondered as my phone vibrated, and it was Jacob.
Jacob: Hey, dear! Happy 4th! Sorry I couldn't be there beside you tonight.
Me: It's okay Jake! See ya later! Are the fireworks about to start?
There were no messages for several heartbeats as I leaned into Kirstin more. I smiled as he replied with a thumbs up and an "I 'heart emoji' U" The smile seemed permanent as I remembered that he was my boyfriend. I turned my phone off and looked around. These were my best friends. Feeling safe and warm beside Kirstin, I leaned even more into her. She tightened her arm around me as we watched the firework show together. I moved my hand, and Kirstin sensed what I wanted because she grabbed my hand. I looked up, and she looked down. Brown met brown, and I whispered: "I don't want anything to change, Kirstie." Kirstin smiled at me warmly and held me close. Her voice was low, as she stated.
Kirstin: Me neither, Kailyn. And I am glad that you said yes.
I heard a sense of relief in her tone, and I remembered her telling me that if I hadn't said yes back in January, she could've died. With a sharp, painful memory, I shuddered slightly and pressed my body into her'. Using her motherly senses, she rubbed the top of my hand with her thumb.
Kirstin: You're okay, sweetheart.
I calmed down, and we both turned our attention to the skies above the mountains as a firework exploded across the skies in a brilliant flash.
