Jade POV
"Because I have all my best friends with me." I told Michael.
All of them smiled, and began to walk outside to wait for the cab.
"And I have my funniest friend with me. Who happens to be my very first best friend." I whispered to Michael.
He smiled and I returned the favor. I learned that Michael isn't great with expressing his feelings. He likes to put on the show that he's tough and no one can get to him.
"Thanks Jade."
"You're welcome." I told him.
Fortunately right when we got outside, the cab pulled up right in front of us and the driver helped us with out bags. We thanked him and climbed in. I gave him my address and he started to drive.
"Music or no." He said, sounding like Germo from Jimmy Kimmel Live.
"Music please." Micaela said, speaking for all of us.
Since she was sitting in the front, the man handed her the AUX cord and she was looking through all her music.
"Please. No white girl music." Michael said.
"HA HA HA. Very funny Michael." she said, sarcastically.
She ended up playing 'My Way' by Fetty Wap.
I was caught off guard because I didn't think she would have this kind of music.
By the time we listened to 4 other songs, we were at my place. The driver helped us unload and I paid for the ride. Surprisingly, I gave him a large amount of tip.
"So there are like 6 rooms upstairs. You can all choose your own room and mine is the one all the way down the hall to your right." I told them.
They all nodded there heads and Micaela yelled, "Dibbs on the second biggest room."
"Fuck dibbs. Who ever gets there first, gets it." Michael said.
"No that's not fair. Dibbs is like the rule for everything." she said.
The argued for what seemed like forever, until McCoy cleared his throat.
"While you two were arguing, I decided I would choose the largest room. So I guess both of you will be getting the same sized room." he said, laughing.
Micaela and Michael looked at each other and nodded their heads. They both flicked McCoy off and went upstairs. McCoy and I laughed so hard, I felt like I was going to throw up.
"I haven't laughed that hard in a long time." I told him, after I settled down.
"I know. How's everything been going?" he asked.
I shrugged, "The usual, I guess. I missed everyone at home, but I wasn't ready to go back yet."
"It's ok. We all missed you too. Actually everything changed after you left." he said, looking at his fingers.
"How?" I asked.
"I'll explain when Michael and Micaela get back. But let's order some food."
I nodded my head in agreement. I called my favorite Chinese restaurant and got pizza. It reminded me something my grandmama would say at thanksgiving, which was 'Black people love to eat.'
"Jade. We need to talk." Michael said, seriously.
"Ok..did I do something wrong?" I asked, curiously.
"No. It's just really important and all of us need to say something now."
I nodded my head, and walked towards the living room where they were all sitting down. They all had on worried faces and looked like they were about to cry. I prepared myself for the worst.
"So..umm I think you should tell her McCoy." Micaela said.
"No. I don't like telling people heart breaking news. I already said that." McCoy told Micaela.
"I'm going to tell her if you don't." Michael threatened.
"No. Don't say anything Michael!" Micaela yelled.
He rolled his eyes and laid back. I knew it was either going to be him or Micaela telling me so I prepared to hear it in the worst way.
"Then tell her!" McCoy yelled.
"Guys, please stop yelling and someone please tell me." I spoke up.
"Let's tell her on 3." Micaela suggested.
We all nodded our heads and I let them know I was ready. Micaela took a deep breath in and tried to say something several times, but she wasn't successful.
"On 3. Ok?" Michael said clearing things.
"1." McCoy said.
"2." Michael and McCoy both said.
"3." They all said.
Right after they said 3 Micaela said, "August died."
My mouth just opened. I couldn't believe it and I honestly thought she was pulling some sick joke on me or something. Apparently she wasn't because Michael and McCoy looked down at their hands. I started to cry, hard. I felt hands hug me, but I didn't look up. I couldn't look up because I was trying to process everything in.
"I'm really sorry Jade. I was trying to save him, I swear." Michael said, crying with me.
"But the last thing he said was 'Tell Jade I love her. No matter what I she thought, it was REAL LOVE." Micaela said, trying to keep it together.
I shook my head. Why lord? That's the only question I could think of. Why me? What have I done to deserve this? We sat there in silence for what felt like 20 minutes.
"The funeral is 3 days from today." Micaela said, breaking the silence.
I nodded my head. I tried to say something, but it hurts to loose someone you actually really cared about you.
Time isn't suppose to be a major factor in love. It's suppose to be the connection between the two people. It's suppose to be that feeling that you always want to be around them and enjoy them. Yes you might fight with them because everyone has to let out some emotions, but it might not come out the right way. But at the end of the day, you both stay committed and love each other unconditionally.
"We'll always be here Jade." Micaela said.
I curled in a ball on my couch next to Michael. I felt my eyes get heavy and close.
