Chapter 10

"Most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?" Daniel asked me.

I thought for a second. "Hmmmm...the time I got my first period."

Daniel grinned and sat straight up. "Oh, this oughta be good."

I continued. "Sooo...I got it over night and didn't notice until Steve pointed it out. Okay, I walked into the kitchen for some chocolate cake, sat down to watch Mickey, when Two-BIt asks me to get him some too. So I got up and got him some cake. Now, Steve had just arrived at our place, and was raiding our fridge. As soon as I turned to give Two-Bit's cake to him, Steve said, "Um, Mel, you have something on your...back of your pants....." I ran to the bathroom, to discover, sure enough, that I got my period.

Daniel was frowning. "Awh, I thought it would be way more dramatic than that."

I smiled. "That's not all though...So I woke up Darry and asked him to drive me to the store. Darry asked me why, and I said, 'feminine problems.' He nodded and we went out to the living room. By this time, Two-Bit and Steve stared at me, grinning. Darry told them to knock it off as we headed outside. So when we got back to the house after buying the stuff I needed, the gang made a banner that said: 'CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST PERIOD, MELODY! YOU'RE A WOMAN NOW!' Darry chuckled and I rolled my eyes. Johnny and Ponyboy looked at me with innocent eyes, confused."

He was laughing by this time. "Oh, man. I would've been mortified."

I playfully hit his toned stomach. "I was....and Dallas even told me, "you're not a woman yet until you've screwed someone.'"

Daniel rolled his eyes and scoffed. "He would say that."

"But he was kidding though."

He shrugged. "I know. But still, that sounds like something he would say."

"Dal jokes around me with all the time." I said again, suspecting Daniel was like everyone else outside the gang. They looked down on Dallas Winston.

"I bet." Daniel's face showed lack of interest. Then he added: "I thought he didn't like kids."

"He doesn't." I paused then shrugged. "I dunno, I guess he, and the rest of the gang, accepted me even though I'm younger because I'm a Curtis."

I laid my head on Daniel's chest while he played with my hair. We were quietly chatting about random stuff when we heard someone come up the hill.

"Uh, Melody...." I heard a voice say.

I looked up to see Ponyboy standing there, with an uneasy expression on his face. I seperated myself away from Daniel. We both sat there while Pony looked at us.

"Hey, Ponyboy." Daniel said, giving a forced smile.

"Hi." My older brother said, crossing his arms. "Why the hell were you guys....spooning or whatever you were doing?"

"It's nothing, Pony." I mumbled, looking down.

"Well it sure looked like something!" He glared at Daniel. 

Daniel cleared his throat, stood up, and stretched out his hand to help me out.  I stood up and my brother scoffed his Daniel's gesture.

The three of us just stood there. Naturally, Daniel and I avoided eye contact with Ponyboy. "I like your sister, okay." Daniel said, hands stuffed in his pockets.

"Well. She's too young to date anyways. My little sister is not getting into a relationship before me." Ponyboy replied, pulling me along. 

I sighed and pulled my arm aw

ay from him. "Glory, Pony, it's nothing! It's not like we were sucking face!"

His grayish-green eyes flashed at me.  "Yeah, well just wait until Darry hears about this." He continued pulling me down the hill.

"Pony...."

"Goodbye, Daniel. And you are not allowed to date my sister." Ponyboy said.

"I guess I'll see you later, Mel!" Daniel called after me, and I swear he was smirking. 

"Byeeee." I called back, seeing the annoyance in Ponyboy's eyes.

At the end of the hill was Sodapop, drinking a Coke. "Hey, Soda." I said, pulling my arm out of Pony's grasp.

"Hi." 

"Well thanks for picking me up."

"Darry made me." Soda snapped back, stil annoyed with me. "Let's go home." He slid into the driver's seat.

Ponyboy sat on the passengers side, leaving me to the back seats. It was an silent drive back, considering both of my brothers were irked with me.
